Antoinette Tuff: Meet the Woman Who Prevented a Mass School Shooting Yesterday

Fortunately, Tuesday’s gunman incident at an elementary school near Atlanta ended with no injuries or deaths. This is mainly thanks to Antoinette Tuff, a school clerk who spent about an hour calmly persuading the gunman to put his rifle down and surrender.

Tuff feared the worst when she encountered the gunman carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and other weapons in her school office. She told reporters, “I saw a young man ready to kill anybody that he could.” Approximately 870 pre-kindergarten to fifth grade students at the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Georgia were safely evacuated during the incident. While the gunman exchanged some shots with the police, no one was hurt.

Tuff told Atlanta’s local news station that the 20-year-old gunman was able to pass the school’s security because he followed a parent who had not shut the door. She immediately began speaking with the gunman in an attempt to reason with him. The gunman told her he had nothing to live for before loading his gun. “I just started talking to him … I let him know what was going on with me and that it would be OK,” she said. “I give it all to God, I’m not the hero. I was terrified.”

She told ABC’s Diane Sawyer that much of her conversation focused not only on trying to understand the gunman, but also on trying to get the gunman to relate to her. “I just started telling him stories,” she said, and things like, “You don’t have to die today.” Tuff told him a story of tragedy in her own life, and explained to reporters that she simply asked him to put his weapons down and surrender to police. She “talked him through it” by reminding him that “life will still bring about turns, but we can learn from it.”

Vera Rubin (b. 1928)

When Vera Cooper Rubin told her high school physics teacher that she’d been accepted to Vassar, he said, “That’s great. As long as you stay away from science, it should be okay.”

Rubin graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1948, the only astronomy major in her class at Vassar, and went on to receive her master’s from Cornell in 1950 (after being turned away by Princeton because they did not allow women in their astronomy program) and her Ph.D. from Georgetown in 1954. Now a senior researcher at the Carnegie Institute’s Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Rubin is credited with proving the existence of “dark matter,” or nonluminous mass, and forever altering our notions of the universe. She did so by gathering irrefutable evidence to persuade the astronomical community that galaxies spin at a faster speed than Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation allows. As a result of this finding, astronomers conceded that the universe must be filled with more material than they can see.

Rubin made a name for herself not only as an astronomer but also as a woman pioneer; she fought through severe criticisms of her work to eventually be elected to the National Academy of Sciences (at the time, only three women astronomers were members) and to win the highest American award in science, the National Medal of Science. Her master’s thesis, presented to a 1950 meeting of the American Astronomical Society, met with severe criticism, and her doctoral thesis was essentially ignored, though her conclusions were later validated. “Fame is fleeting,” Rubin said when she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. “My numbers mean more to me than my name. If astronomers are still using my data years from now, that’s my greatest compliment.”

Um, that would be Massachusetts, of course.

Of course it's Cali. OVERrated we all scream.

A three-way runaway with Alaska, Oregon sweet home, and Maine. Please don't move to Oregon. Thank you in advance.

Love you New York.

Well, if you're arrogant, you're rude.

Cali, babies, CALI.

All hail Louisiana.

That's almost unanimous. Don't make me tell you.

Read the captions if you suck at geography.

Basically I have lived in, currently live in or plan to move to all the worst states in America. On the upside I also lived in the drunkest and that was pretty rockin’

maiyamayhem:

I bought some lone plastic knitting needles at a reuse art shop here in Eugene called MECCA. I put them in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes like spaghetti. I pulled one out at a time, quickly shaped it, then dunked it into ice water. Voila! Four knitting needle bangles for only $1 and less than 5 minutes!

If you can still walk into the kitchen and make tea, you obviously slept with the wrong person ~JW

How do you think John Watson got the nick name of Three Continents Watson? Give us some  details.

My initial response on seeing that quote attributed to John was to loudly exclaim, “Lord have MERCY.”

I LOVE the “Three Continents” thing, which of course came direct from ACD himself, as John tells us about his ”experience of women which extends over many nations and three separate continents.” If I had to guess, I’d say those three were Europe, Asia, and Africa. And I imagine, given how often we see his tongue, that it’s probably involved somehow with that long string of happy women. And you know, if he’s looking to add a fourth, I’m right over here in North America waiting.

And I definitely won’t be making tea afterwards. ;)

The original quote is “If I can still walk to the kitchen after sex,you don’t deserve a sandwich” I dressed it up a bit, for a quote from John.

Whoa wait Africa…. I mean I know there are White/Euro Africans but now my head is all filled with the lovely idea that John Watson got his swirl on in canon.
