The good thing about reading fics on my phone is that it saves the bookmark. So if I finished a fic and re-download it, the app simply opens to the last spot I was in the fic (i.e. the end).  So I just downloaded one that I was sure I hadn’t read but I had indeed read it and obviously it was so forgettable that I don’t remember a thing about it. A long ass fic should not be forgotten. I’m trying to decide if I’ll give it another go right now because the rec was rather lovely. But damn how do you forget a 100k fic? Yikes.

One year at our state-wide G & T fair, I was reviewed by multiple judges. The way these things went is one set of judges reviewed your project and if another set of judges came to review you again then you knew you were being considered for a blue ribbon and a win. That year I was reviewed not just once or twice but nine times.

I remember it being quite odd because not only were the students abuzz but so were my teachers. “You must be up for the grand jury prize,” One of my teachers exclaimed then added in a hush “We’ve never won that before!”

I felt amazing.

The project was initially put together in less than a week at a local level. I’d always moved on to state so I got a bit lazy that year. Afterwards one of the judges slipped me info that it was close as to whether I’d move on to state and thus I had my wake up call. When state came two months later, I had spent every day perfecting my project.

In retrospect, it wasn’t that impressive. I just taught myself how to speak Spanish. I got some books. I looked up some things. I learned Spanish. Big whoop. I had a natural tongue for it and the rest was just book learning. However something about the project was impressive at the time.  I was asked to speak with a native speaker.  This was actually hard for them to pull off because I lived in a very  non minority area. I was asked to read poems. I was asked to recite things. I was asked to conjugate verbs. In the end about six judges all congregated around me and asked me the question that apparently everyone just had to know.

"So your…parents…," one began then glanced a look the others "what do they do for a living?"

I wanted to lie actually. I still remember my initial feeling was to lie and say my parents were a doctor and a lawyer but that just seemed wrong and just…fuckin stupid.

"My mom works as a cashier and my dad is a truck driver…well preacher and  a truck driver. He drives truck but when he is at home he is a minister." I answered honestly and waited.

"Oh…" they all seemed to say in unison. Then they asked me more questions about my project. ‘How did I do it?’

"I got out all the books from the For’City library."

"Did you practice with anyone?"

"No, not many really any Spanish speakers at home. We have a Spanish teacher in the high school but I’m just in fifth grade and I have to go home after school."

And so on…

Then they came back around once again…

"And you sure your mom and dad are just a cashier and a truck driver?"

"Yeah. Mom has been one for 10 years and Dad became a truck driver after he got his CDL about 2 years ago."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Did they go to college?"

"No, well my mom went took a few classes at the community college..I think. My dad got his GED just before he became a truck driver."

And it went on that way for a bit. It wasn’t until I came home and relayed the story to my mom that I understood what was going on.

"They didn’t think we could have a smart kid because we’re just a cashier and a truck driver."

"But that’s…..stupid."

"It is baby."

And I’m not smart. I could be smarter. I should be smarter. I plead the fifth on why I chose my path but that always, always pissed me the fuck off when I thought about it. My parents were very much hill folk but they made me. And yeah I’ve done better than my parents but that doesn’t mean I am better than them. Watch your mouth people. Ordinary shouldn’t be a dirty fuckin word.

Sherlock's Parents

anotherwellkeptsecret:

We don’t have a lot of information or backstory regarding Sherlock’s parents. There are so many ifs and I love ifs. It’s like a blank canvas we get to play with.

Perhaps Mummy was married to another man before getting remarried? Maybe there was an affair. There was a fallout. Or maybe she was disinherited for marrying against her family’s wishes. Or vice versa! Maybe it’s neither of these things and they’re simply a middle-class couple. They could be supremely intelligent, of course. They could be of average intelligence. They could be as dumb as a box of rocks. They may or may not have had an impact on Sherlock and Mycroft’s education. Maybe Sherlock and Mycroft’s education was provided for by extended (French!) family. Or maybe it wasn’t. Maybe they didn’t go to public school. Or maybe they were sent off to boarding school.

There are so many delicious ifs, it’s hard for me to be disappointed when I know absolutely nothing about these two people. If John’s involvement in the show has showed us anything, it’s that someone who appears to be ordinary can be extraordinary. We just don’t have enough data.

YESSSSSSS!

What do you mean your dad is a minister at home?

Worded poorly on my part. My dad was an over the road truck driver who went on long hauls that took him away for weeks. He couldn’t really minister to a congregation full-time but once he was back in town (home), he was able to minster. Not that he stopped being a minster when he away….just he didn’t hold service when he was on the road.

Religious references in The Empty Hearse?

Now, this is all coming from an atheist, but I couldn’t help but notice the religious themes underpinning this particular episode. Please, if someone is more well versed in this area, I’d love to hear your two cents. I’m not saying that the religious references are important to the fall theories, but by the third rewatch, I don’t think these are happy coincidences.

In the restaraunt Mary says “Oh god!” and Sherlock responds that he isn’t quite…

Yes, yes, yes! Remember Irene’s line? And God if we really are thinking about the tumor/using again possibility then we are truly seeing everything from the ‘damaged, delusional and believer in a higher power’ in this case it’s Sherlock’s POV with everything.

"chalie manson" hey whoever wrote that needs to knock a couple cocks out of their hands before they type i mean come on

Heh well outside of the typo….I’ve always enjoyed the “Don’t trust a PK” line of thinking.  Most feel we’re crazy and dangerous. I like that.

Well the preacher tried his best
To keep the girl in line
She undermines all that he believes
The beast could not be caged
And the daughter has her way
The souls of town, they could not be saved!

Beautifully stated! Your family should not have been scrutinized that way, and that is so sad. To think that so many kids face this, and miss out on things because of elitist asses. I used to be a class clown, and teachers would give me the stank eye for not being dumb! Who wrote this paper? Did someone help you? How ridiculous? So, because I am an asshole, I can’t be smart? Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Thank you for reading! It really is funny to see how elitism and privilege go hand in hand sometimes. Ahh well.
