“I always like to tell this story: I was fucking Christian Bale, Batman, up the arse on a rooftop in King’s Cross and the crew was filming from another rooftop on the adjacent building. I hadn’t done gay penetrative sex, this was my first shot at it, so I’m standing behind Christian’s big naked back, going, “Wow, this is so… Peculiar.” So I start, you know, pumping away slowly and I start to go more like a bunny rabbit, then like a Jack Russell. And I put my head to the side of his head, away from the camera, and I say, “I’m sure I’d have come by now. I’m going to have a look,” and I glanced back and I saw the crew packing up and walking away! I think Todd [Haynes] had been so respectful of us that he hadn’t wanted to interrupt us by saying, “Cut”… Or we didn’t hear “Cut”. It was very funny. Christian’s never written to me… He never phones any more… It’s really upsetting.”

So there’s a phrase used in Al-Anon, (a  12 step group for family/friends of alcoholics) "Take what you like and leave the rest". That phrase helped me as I listened to others share their experiences and stories. I learned from them and learned to separate what didn’t work for me and what did. Everyone might have been at those meetings for a similar reason (a loved one who was an alcoholic) but everyone’s experiences were different. They brought different experiences, beliefs, and impressions. I didn’t have to take everything they said as gospel (literally: for me, an omnipotent God as a higher power is not going to work) to be in communion with them.

That belief has stuck with me since I attended meetings regularly because I used to struggle with all or nothing thinking: “you’re with me or against me” or “if we disagree on X, I can’t understand anything about you”.  It’s really helped me in life.

So when a friend asked me if I was staying in the fandom after my disappointment with series 3, I had a think. And another think. Then I thought: YES. And when my initial reaction to some very dear friends was shock and disappointment (Ha! I bet this was mutual!) because they adored something that left a bad taste in my mouth I thought: SELF. Back on up.

"Take what you like and leave the rest"

I read of a LOT of meta today and a lot of people’s impressions and what I got was we all bring our own ideas, experiences, beliefs, desires, and preferences to what we experience. For me, I feel more that there is less right or wrong or good fan or bad fan but a lot of we bring different things to the table. (disclaimer Ahoy! There are imho some legit problems. For one example, TBB I am looking at you Racist stereotypes much? There are also some good areas for debate. However, I leave that to people more constitutionally suited for it.)  I can learn from people sharing their thoughts even if agree 10% or 1% or 99%.

"Take what you like and leave the rest"

This goes to the show too. I come to BBC Sherlock as an ACD/Granada/all-around Holmes fan. I like: Ben & Martin in their roles, cases modern London, some of the fabulous other characters (oh, Molly I adore you even more!), some of the episodes, and some of the scenes throughout. Others, I am neutral about. Still others, I strongly dislike. (For me s3 veered too far away from what I think a Sherlock Holmes version should be - but that is because of what I bring with me)

So what do I have? Some fabulous friends, keen opinions to digest, some great fics and arts to experience, lots of ideas I want to write, a 21st century Sherlock to use as a jumping off point, some great scenes. That is PLENTY.

So yeah. I’m making myself at home. My chair is in the sitting room in front of the fire. Cup of tea?

This is one of the many reasons I love this woman. I know I’m kind of on the opposite end of the bridge where season 3 is concerned, but there’s still plenty of middle ground.

I know several people I care about very deeply are hurting, actively hurting, because this season was such a disappointment to them, enough that they don’t feel like they belong around the fandom, or even don’t WANT to be around the fandom anymore. That hurts me too, because I can imagine that pain. Fandom means opening yourself up and letting something in, and that makes us all vulnerable.

The canon is just there as the fodder (it’s canon-fodder, ha!). The fandom is what we do with it: glory in it, ignore it, fix it, grumble about it, love it, hate it, whatever. Transformative works come from anger and frustration born out of love, as much as out of pure unadulterated love, so I hope everybody will stick around and work out their frustrations in works of utter brilliance. <3

image

The best part of fandom is coming together, drawn in by a mutual love of something that’s captured our imaginations. Then taking that love and manipulating it for all it’s worth. Every fic, every art, every meta, every AU, all of it. And I am honored to share with you.

northray replied to your post: Mary got to CAM because Janine let her…

Precisely.

I mean say she knocked her out from the back.

Even then there are cameras, etc in his office (I don’t have proof of that but hell if there are cameras in my office then there are cameras in his).

So Mary’s face would be seen and say she took out all the cameras somehow…surely she’d know that Sherlock could figure it out.

A case like that? He’d get called in on that.

Soooo I guess what I’m saying is I do NOT trust Mary anymore. There is something off. There had BETTER be some good explanation for that shit because it doesn’t fuckin add up.

Sadly I don’t think there will be any answer and I’m supposed to simply trust her because Sherlock and John trust her….but yeah if they had the balls to actually make her into a true villain…ahh shit they can’t. DAMN THAT BABY. That baby changes EVERYTHING.

I hate that baby.

So Mary’s…

I hate to say that they (intentionally) wrote themselves into a hole with this baby…..but they (intentionally) wrote themselves into a hole with this baby.

I’m kinda think they did it on purpose. It’s an amazing challenge really. I spent half of the day talking with tv writers about it and what options you have once you bring a baby on scene (the consensus is that it’s a kiss of death mostly).

One of the interesting scenarios brought up  (and I hate that I didn’t think about it) was Veronica Mars and Meg. Veronica Mars is dating Duncan Kane. Duncan had ended his relationship with Meg. Meg is preggers. Now this happens a lot of course in soap type things but the interesting thing with Veronica Mars is that you couldn’t make Meg into a villain for a few reasons including the fact that she was nice to veronica, she was in the hospital, and she was carrying Duncan’s baby.

So what to do? Well they killed her off and the baby survived which also lead to Duncan leaving the show as well.

They could kill Mary. They could kill the baby. They can’t kill both. It’s absolutely impossible to do and maintain an audience. Of course we’re all thinking of it in American audience rules (which are actually different from a foreign audience including the UK). So maybe in the UK you can do something different. My history/knowledge of their TV is strong when it comes to Britcoms but the other stuff…not as much so I’m not sure if it has ever happened in their TV history. We don’t do it here. We just…DON’T.

So from a writing POV, I am utterly fascinated to see what they decide to do with it. Honestly I think they leave Mary at home because all she wants to do it be a mum. So Mary sends John off to be with Sherlock as much as he wants. And every so often Mary pops up and helps out….

That is what I hate. They say they have S4 and S5 planned out so obviously they have some sort of idea where they’re going with this. But like you said, they really can’t get rid of both of them. I can’t imagine a scenario where that’s a possibility.

But think about it this way… they are living the dream these two guys. They’re fanboys having fun with this. They’re going to write something interesting just because they want to. It’s a kiss of death in a lot of ways but it’s not impossible to work around. The way we write tv changes all the time. Who knows…they could be coming up with daring things that people will talk about for years from now. At least TV writers will… my God think about that episode of Mash where they smothered the baby? Yes, it was the finale but you can’t tell me people (who watched it) didn’t remember that episode partly for that very chilling reason…. as a reminder:

During the final days of the Korean WarCapt. Hawkeye Pierce has been sent to a mental hospital for treatment by Dr. Sidney Freedman after suffering a nervous breakdown. Pierce’s memories of what led to his breakdown have become repressed, and as he and Freedman draw them forth, Pierce at first remembers the details inaccurately………..The bus later pulled off the road and everyone was told to stay quiet so they would not be discovered by the enemy. One woman carried a live chicken that would not stop squawking, prompting Pierce to angrily admonish her to “keep that damn chicken quiet!”, after which the noise suddenly stopped.

This last detail causes Pierce to break down sobbing as he finally reveals the true ending of the story. When Hawkeye snapped at the woman, he had told her to keep not a chicken quiet, but rather her baby. Unable to keep the baby from crying, the woman made the decision to smother her own child to silence it and protect the lives of the people on the bus. Upon seeing what had happened, Pierce was so traumatized that he repressed the memory of what occurred.

I dunno man. I’m getting a little excited to see. Moffat and Gatiss can be ruthless with their darlings when they need to be. I’m interested to see how they handle actual darlings in the future.

GUYS YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW WONDERFUL THIS IS

Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease and while it’s progress can be slowed down, it currently doesn’t have a cure. People suffering from Parkinson’s will experience a gradual loss of coordination and ability to perform even the most basic of every day tasks, including feeding themselves.

This fucking spoon is HUGEfor them. Look at that gif of the man just trying to eat with the regular spoon and compare it to the liftware device. It’s NOT just a spoon, by the way, it comes with a fork as well, for example.

I found the website for the project where you can purchase a spoon for someone you know/love and even possibly donate money to help someone out who can’t afford it themselves right: HERE.

At the very least, please spread this for all the people who have Parkinson’s or loved ones with Parkinson’s.

You’ll help them take part of their life back.

2014: The Year TV Starts Atoning for Its Lack of Diversity?

2013 was a great year for television. So great, in fact, that many critics’ best-of-the-year lists offered some especially enthusiastic and superlative praise. "One of the best years for TV in a long time,"Time magazine noted. "One of the best years in TV history," the A.V. Club echoed a few weeks later.

But 2013’s stellar offerings didn’t come without their share of problems. Conversations about TV from the past calendar year raised questions about the character diversity and representations of minority groups. Why does Mindy Kaling only date white guys in The Mindy Project? Will Girls get over its race problem? Can Doctor Who overcome its disappointing whiteness and maleness? Given the success of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, why don’t more showrunners take cues from Shonda Rhimes and make diversity a priority? How can portrayals of bisexual people improve if television doesn’t even get female friendships right? Why is Orange Is the New Black the gold standard for TV diversity when even it could do so much better?
