It’s happened. I’ve become the person who gets picky over using the word gray instead of grey in a fanfic set in the UK. I think I need to get out more.
As John looked out on the gray skies he sadly thought about seeing Sherlock lie on the sidewalk. He hopped off the curb and raised his hand to flag a taxi back to their apartment which was just a few miles away. Once he walked up the 13 steps to their apartment, he sat down and ate a salad with ranch dressing. He then followed it up with a Dr. Pepper. Suddenly he picked up the phone and dialed Mike Stamford to invite him out to have a few beers at his favorite bar. He arrived and found the bar had redesigned and now had two floors so he got in the elevator then walked inside. He heard a truck backfire then he fell to the floor. Embarrassed he picked himself up and brushed off the dust from his sweater.
"Wow" Mike said "You look really hungry. I was just eating some cookies. Do you want some?"
"No offense Mike," John replied, "I’d prefer a Popsicle"
*cackles*

I don’t think it was ever pointed out to you but….none of us are British. At least I know me and angelchrys aren’t. We’re just used to reading British literature so we mentally brit-pick things. It can, of course, be a hindrance at times because it sometimes makes things less enjoyable but ya know…meh.
As for whether Brits don’t write Americans well… ya know I honestly can’t say in a fanfic world. Do you have any examples? I’d enjoy seeing the effort.

Would I lie about my past to my husband? Hah. Yes.
Does this mean I don’t love him? No.
Does this mean that the love I have for him is a bit selfish? Yes.
Does this mean this love is any less real than the love given to him by his best friend? I don’t know.

(Stands up and waives her arms around) I’m British. I don’t get wound up about ‘gray’ instead of ‘grey’, or ‘pants’ instead of ‘trousers’ - you just kind of get used to that. But the violent abuse of the verb ‘to go’ really drives me up the wall! Sorry. Just saying is all.
(Just so you know there are some of us out here writing fanfics too.)
I don’t actually get wound up about ‘gray’ myself. The only issue I take with ‘pants’ usage is that it gets a bit confusing in sex scenes when you’re thinking “oh that was quick, ahh wait no they meant trousers.” Never good to take someone out of the story.
But I do the same thing with every setting. When someone writes something in a Southern American setting and they get it all wrong then I find myself very unhappy with the story. I’m far more forgiving for Britpicking actually.
But up there I had wrote a truly deplorable thing just to torment poor Christy and outside of the poor writing it was very, very inaccurate to the locale. I think the person who said Brits write Americans poorly was taking umbrage at how poor a job I did as they thought I was poking fun at Americans writing for Brits..But I wasn’t. I was just being a little shit and tormenting a friend with something terribly inaccurate.
