aboutbetareaders:

I’m a Finnish student doing my Bachelor’s degree study about beta readers in fan fiction. For that I need to ask you guys a couple of questions. I’d be really thankful if you’d take the time to tell me:

1. Why be a beta reader?

2. Why do/don’t you have a beta reader?

3. Who is your beta reader/fan fic writer to you (stranger, Internet friend, sister)?”

You don’t have to answer all of these questions, even answering one of them would be a huge help! If you don’t want to answer here, you can be anonymous in my ask box or e-mail me at aboutbetareaders@yahoo.com. I will not use your e-mail address for anything.

My ramblings below the cut:

Dancers Photography by Ludovic Florent

” Poussière d’étoiles” is a series realized by French photographer Ludovic Florent. He gives pride of place to dancers full of grace by adding flour. Sand grains highlight the majestic movement effect of their dance. More photos in the next part of the article.

sometimes i’m in a good mood and I think I want to write.

then i think i’m in too good a mod to write.

because if i write i’ll remember i’m an untalented hack.

and that will kill my happy mood.

so i don’t write.

So we went to a new comic book store today. It was not a good experience for me. The clerk called me “honey” and when the boyfriend asked me to do something for him he said “yeah let the woman do it”….

I had planned on buying an action figure from him but when those two things happened I thought ‘No sir you’re not getting my money.’

Now it was a bad experience but I’ve heard about worse so I’m not terribly upset in regards to me. What I am a bit miffed about is that if this was my first time in his store then he wasn’t really welcoming. He didn’t even ask if he could help me find anything though he did ask the boyfriend.

It’s kinda shitty to think that if it was my first experience in the store that it might have turned me off from coming back to that store (and possibly stores like it). But as we left I thought about what my first comic book experience was….

It was Keith’s Comics.  The absolute first time I remember buying a comic book was Buffy.  I went into the store and I was helped to find it afterwards I saw a movie at the Angelika and sat through the credits as I started to read the comic. I kept returning to Keith’s to buy issues and then after the third time Keith said “Have you ever thought about reading Astonishing X-Men?” and I said “No” and he told me about it and ended with “I know you like Buffy and it’s just mutants instead of vampires. Give it a try” I picked it up along with my Buffy and of course I fell in love with it.  Keith and me never became good friends. I’m sure he wouldn’t know me from Eve if he ever saw me but he was welcoming.

I’ve been to other comic book stores like the one today and had similar experiences. Everyone jokes that it’s because it’s so shocking to see a woman that men working in the stores act poorly because they don’t know any better but the reality is they continue to perpetuate poor attitudes that turn people off from reading comics and that’s a bit…shite.

I’m just really happy that I found Keith’s. That I had that good experience. Today I still read comics that I find interesting. I’ve moved beyond just Whedonverse comics. I read a few different series and even know some of the lingo. This never would have happened if I’d constantly been dismissed. I’m just really happy I walked into Keith’s first. It could have turned out much differently.
