The first time I was called a “nigger” was this sort of interesting experience. I keep thinking I’ll write it into some fictional work because it’s sad but it’s also kind of awkward and amusing.

So I was walking home. I was either five or six. And this truck of boys came rolling by and they shouted, “NIGGER!”

I heard it. I stopped. I was scared. Then I realized they weren’t going to lynch me. So my next step was to shout something back. And I did

"HONKER!"

Heh…I didn’t know the correct racial slur to throw at them.

They didn’t laugh because they were at least a half a mile down the road by the time I had figured out what to say.

But I’m sure they would have.

Maybe.

You always remember your first time.

And mine could have been worse.

My sister’s and brother’s had worse first times.

My parents surely did.

That moment both did and did not shape me.

I was aware racism existed before that but it was another reminder.

But mostly it made me want to have a comeback for anything anyone could ever say to me…even if they said the worst of things.

It could work in a story. In a movie. Somewhere.

I’ve just not figured it out in 30 years so I figure I’ll tell it here.

I was working on my I’m going to watch Sherlock S3 in one sitting liveblogging when I noticed something in HLV: We all talk about the look on John’s face during the scene when he discovers Janine and she joins Sherlock in the bath and how it just screams jealousy. He’s shocked too, but there’s just so much raw jealousy there it’s hard to miss. In fact, I can’t not see jealousy when I watch these scenes and do you know why? It’s not just because of the look on John’s face. It’s because of all the fucking green in these shots.
