I don't like how Fargo portrays women.

Yeah well I don't like how they portray black people

What do you mean? There are no black people.

Oh. I see. Well let's focus on your woman problem more.

No, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying that there are women in the show and the way they are portrayed is a problem.

Which is better? Poor representation or no representation?

Well to be fair there aren't a lot of black people in that area.

Huh. Just like Girls huh?

“The major weakness–and one it’s getting tiresome to note in drama after drama–it’s the writing of several characters’ wives, who are portrayed as ballbusters, opportunists, or both. In an antihero-TV culture where subcultures of fans have ganged up on the likes of Breaking Bad’s Skyler and Sons of Anarchy’s Tara, trashing them as bitches and buzzkills who get in the protagonists’ way, intentionally or not these characterizations feel like they’re ratifying that attitude. It’s not as if most of the men here are any less caricatured (as in the movie, it’s a stylistic choice and takes a while to adjust to) but there are more of them and they get more screen time to develop.”

REVIEW: In FX’s Fargo, the Devil Goes Up to Minnesota | TIME.com (via acafanmom)

yyyyep. The wife-murder reallly put me off, I have to say.

(via professorfangirl)

Hmm interesting because the female characters in the original were so sympathetically written. Caveat: I haven’t watched yet, waiting until it airs here, so I’ll be interested in seeing for myself.

The female characters in Fargo, I thought, WERE sympathetically written, except for Lester’s wife - and let’s not forget that a woman need not be sympathetically written to be an interesting character. The deputy is clearly going to be a lead character going forward and she is fantastic, and I loved the chief’s pregnant wife.  Lester’s wife had a story function, but even so, I didn’t find her one-note horrible.  There was a sense of history to her frankly pretty awful emotional abuse of Lester, and I’m not excusing it, but that is part of the genesis - and Lester’s horrible act is meant to reflect not only his level of frustration but also his fundamental weakness in that he can’t find another way to deal with the situation.

“So let me see if I understand this. In other words, if we put black people or POC in the film, then people would notice it, and that would have been like really, really distracting, taking people out of the film. So instead, we got a whole bunch of white British, American and Australian actors to represent all mankind, because it‘s just a lot easier?

And, furthermore, putting people of color in the film would have somewhat diminished the biblical Noah, making it look, God forbid, like some kind of Star Trek movie?

Sorry I’m all confused here. I was thinking that, if you want to represent all mankind in a film, then wouldn’t it make sense to have a cast that did actually represent all of mankind, in every color and hue, instead of having an all white cast, and telling audiences to just squint their eyes, and pretend that he’s another race, because it’s all just a myth after all? So black people can’t be mythical too? Nope, I guess we’re too real, too urban.”

Simultaneously the worst and best movie ever made

Actually one of my teachers watched every single version of Romeo and Juliet with the original text in front of him to prove that this was the worst version, but to his great dismay its the most accurate film adaptation of it, with the lines closest to the original text and most similar stage direction and relayed emotions.

He proceeded to show it to us in class.

oh man what is this

I know the source text, but what version is this?

I’ve told the story before but in highschool or E.Lit teacher sat my dumb ass class down and had us read this. Kids didn’t get it. So we watched like the 80s versions. KIDS DIDN’T GET IT. At her wits end she rented this from Hollywood Video and showed it to the class

And the kids fucking understood it. Like passed the exam on it and everything.

To this day it BAFFLES me.

actually it makes perfect fucking sense

because Shakespeare is NOT, I repeat NOT “high literature”.  he was basically the Elizabethan equivalent of a Seinfeld writer.  so when you watch them and they’re all quaintly Elizabethan, you lose a LOT of the awesomely shitty jokes because “ooh, history” instead of “dudebros making dick jokes” (I’m pretty sure roughly 47% of all of Shakespeare’s work can be summed up as “dudebros making dick jokes”)

also, I believe this is William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, starring Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes

You’re forgetting the fart jokes, complete disdain for authority and obscene number of puns.

SCREAMING

I have been screaming since I saw this last night and then I began living in a mad world in which April is a jealous bitch because what a beautiful world it would be if the actors from MY show were like this. Like would every day be an amazing day?

And seriously I keep thinking about the fact that it’s far more reasonable and logical to think that Destiel COULD happen. I honestly don’t think they were planning it. There was no DC (Destiel Conspiracy) from the get go but they could go there. They really could. And they might. They just might. And what kind of insanity is that? That the AMERICAN TV show about hunters and demons and angels could be the one to make a transition from friends to a relationship thereby showing the fluidity of sexuality and the power of love? THE AMERICAN TV show.  From the land that created the website godhatesfags. The country that still doesn’t have 100% gay marriage laws. I just….

I know it’s mixing reality with the whole thing but I simply am just flabbergasted that Destiel COULD happen and Johnlock is a fuckin fevered dream. It’s just…it’s a bit maddening.
