Okay so I’m probably reading way too much into the lighting here but I noticed while I was coloring this scene that Spike is, like, surrounded by darkness while Buffy is completely illuminated by her home. Then Spike sees her and how upset she is and instead of hurting her like he was planning he just kind of joins her and then he’s in the light with her. He doesn’t even say anything. He just kind of sits with her in silence and puts a hand on her back, just to say, I’m here and I’ve decided to be on — by your— side. I don’t know man, I just love this scene and them so much.
You’re not reading too much into it. I am 200% sure that is exactly what they meant to show us in this moment. It’s all part of Spike’s character development of finding the light and his better self. Also compare it to a scene we’d saw earlier. Drusilla was in darkness and then when she sired him she drew him down into the darkness out of the shot.
Also this is the episode we find out what Spike said was the best night of his life…..which later became a different night…a night where he simply holds Buffy all night.
