Why don't you think Gatiss/Moffat wants to make John and Sherlock's romantic relationship canon?
Because I’m hedging my bets based on the disappointing track record of television franchises? In the immediate post-S3 period, I actually thought that this might be where they’re headed (I have a meta somewhere that mentioned it… but I have no idea where it might be at this point), and truthfully I go back and forth on it - mostly because I don’t want to be disappointed in the end. I think it’s possible - I think it would be an incredibly ballsy thing to do, and if they do it, then - well, I won’t claim that no one would be happier than me, but I’d be one pretty happy camper.
That said… I just don’t feel like - I don’t really subscribe to conspiracy theories and, as I said, it would be ballsy. It would take real conviction on their parts to make it happen, and I’m not convinced they have that kind of conviction in the story they’re telling. And, honestly, I kind of feel like it already is canon? Not in the explicit “I love you” “I love you MORE” sense, but in the sense that it seems pretty clear how they feel about each other, no matter what they say aloud? And since I think there’s value in bringing people who are perhaps not as welcoming of an explicit relationship a little further down the road of “how GREAT are somewhat-more-than-platonic-male-relationships??” I can’t help but think that there’s value in keeping it kind of like

Mark Gatiss on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island DisksIt’s an older interview from 2011 but I hadn’t encountered it before. It’s pretty funny, yet beautifully intimate and very touching. At times I laughed out loud, at others I found it hard to listen to Mark speaking through what I believe are tears. He breaks my heart.

Aw, you listened to it! *sobs* Yes, it’s heartbreaking, that little pause, it gets me every time… When you are familiar with the way he usually speaks, you can hear how hard he struggles to keep himself together. But it’s also so very delightful. :)

Fuuuuuuck. Suddenly there are all these HBO shows on amazon prime??!!!??!! WHich is something I’ve been hoping for forever? There are all these shows I need to watch like Sopranos and The Wire and aaaaaa I’m so overwhelmed and I don’t know where to start so I’m probably gonna watch Dance Moms instead???

Well the difference is taking a character that has previously not known as a queer character and stating implicitly that the character is indeed queer. That’s quite a bit different from playing a character that is known as queer from the get-go. That is something many, many actors and writers would be leery of. Additionally a character that is very well known and in essence changing that part of the character is quite different from playing a queer character. It’s not as simple as saying they’re not afraid to play a queer character. No, they’re most likely not. However it is not as simple as playing a queer character. It is changing what many people believe to be and changing that. That is something that anyone would think twice about. I’m all for it. Queer Han Solo, Queer Dean Winchester, Queer Hamlet…well Queer-er Hamlet. The argument of fear of changing something is valid though. Think of the shit Moffat gets just for the poetic licenses he takes with Doctor Who. And it’s not a hundred fifty year old beloved institution. If they were afraid then they’d have every right to be. I want them to not be afraid but I won’t completely fault them if they are.
