They only did it to shut the vocal minority up, but all it did was divide the fandom more. Why didn’t they just go with Maggie Grace? That would NOT have caused controversy.

Someone replied with this and I just wanted to say something about it.

First of all, Maggie Grace is a blonde haired, white girl. In what world do we need more of those on TV?

Second, what the fuck is the “vocal minority?” Do you mean the dedicated group of viewers who watch a show that almost entirely lacks representation of people who look like them? Are you upset that they’ve raised their voices to call out the whitewashing and near absence of POC in this show and others? Are you bothered that they want to see actors who look like them and not just the “vocal majority” who seek to oppress them? That sounds a little racist, imho.

Finally, yes, casting Maggie Grace would not have caused controversy. Because she’s just another pretty white girl. Just like all the pretty white girls on TV. But, soon as they bring a colored girl in, it’s a problem. You know what that is? Racism. Simple as that.

Would you be interested in saying anything about this?

wow. wow.

yes, they absolutely did it to “shut the vocal minority up,” i.e. get people off their back for the White Out that is their casting. but we aren’t going to fall for tokenism of the most transparent sort, so it didn’t work.

if the fandom is offended by casting a person of color in a role they imagined as white, the fandom is racist. end of story. witness the anger over The Hunger Games.

moreoer, to use the desire to avoid controversy as a benchmark is the position of privilege and really gestures toward the phenomenal lack of self-awareness of their own privilege rampant in significant portions of this fandom (and everywhere else, to be sure).

For the sake of my blood pressure I’ve made a point of not discussing this show’s issues with race at length.

The OP’s confession just says it all, doesn’t it? This show caters to a bunch of homophobic, racist, entitled little bitches who have never, and probably will never, step out of their privileged little bubble.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to educate ignorant white people on life. It simply isn’t worth the breath I’d undoubtedly be wasting. Call me when they’ve travelled for the first time and had their first experience looking around and going, “I’m the only person like me here. I feel so exposed.”

I’m with the 3 comments above from ashermajestywishes, angstbot and angiesvoice. Why was it even a problem at all that she wasn’t white? I can’t believe parts of this fandom still react this way, it’s disgusting.

My biggest issue with Rapunzel was she was only in it for like 5 minutes even though they made quite a big deal of casting her at the time. It totally made me think she’d be a reoccurring character in 3b. Also, I sort of think their twist on her story was a shitty one.

“We’ve been coming up on six years of existence and we don’t have a use of force on our unit. Which means we never tased anybody. We’ve never shot anybody. We’ve never hit anybody with [a baton]. But patients, talking to them, we get the result we want in the end. And we don’t have to force it on them.”

I said, “The only way I can play someone this hard is for something to be peeled away each week, and the first thing that needs to go is the wig.” I just wanted to deal with her hair. It’s a big thing with African-American women…You start when you’re just a young girl. Do you twist it? Do you leave it natural when it’s so hard to take care of? Then you start wearing wigs but every night before bed you’ve got to take the wig off and deal with your hair underneath. And it’s a part of Annalise that I needed the writers to deal with because I’ve never seen it, ever, on TV and I thought it would be very powerful. It’s part of her mask. - Viola Davis(x)

Pilot script is in the producer's hands (well inbox).

Okay. It’s done. I sent a first (really third but it’s first to him) draft of the pilot spec. I was requested to write it based on the producer’s idea. I really didn’t find it funny but hey it was a chance to write. I’m not going to turn that down. So neat-o.

God how depressing will it be when he comes back and says they want to go in a different direction but thanks for blah blah blah? Pretty, pretty depressing.

Look there were some good lines in the script. There were some lines that I had to cram in to connect with his vision. Is it the funniest thing I’ve written? NO. But it was an experience.

Side Note: The funniest thing I’ve ever written was a Happy Endings spec that will never see the light of day.

I  just feel neat for having done it. And hey that’s kind of enough for me right now.

Oh it won’t be in the future. I’m sure.

But I’m happy with the experience thus far.

Lemme see their contracts and make sure there isn’t a “no slander” clause and then we’ll talk.

Y’all know John Cho was lowkey speaking his mind to the press last time. So they probably told him to try to keep it together this round.

marfmellow:

If you look at the world and say “Yes, there are enough homes for people, yes, there is enough food for people, but if we give it away for free they won’t have earned it and the economy will collapse.” Then you have chosen money (a constructed medium of exchange) over living beings who only want to continue living in peace and safety.

And I have no qualms telling you, that is the wrong choice, and you have been brainwashed by this destructive, exploitative system.
