miscellaneousanthropology:

Hey y’all! I’m Tina, a recent graduate in Biological Anthropology form the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on the evolution of human hair diversity - something which is severely under-researched, despite the fact that its one of the most visibly varying traits we humans have!

I was offered a place to do my PhD at Cambridge, but alas, funding did not come through. I will reapply Cambridge, but I’ve also spoken to some really amazing Professors at Penn State and Harvard University who’ve encouraged me to apply to their graduate programs and work with them on this project, but I simply cannot afford the cost of applications before the deadlines , so I am crowdfunding over the next 10 days (check it out).

My bachelor’s thesis was entitled Human Hair Diversity: Quantitative variation of hair fibre shape and pigmentation. The department liked it and awarded it a Starred First (82) and my supervisor and I are working on a publication for a peer-reviewed journal based on this research right now. I ended up finding a lot of interesting things that I’m dying to share with you all! (And hopefully I will be able to share that publication with you all in a few months)

To keep it brief, I’m interested in answering questions such as:

  • Why did humans evolve such a wide range of hair textures and colours?
  • Do certain textures/colours provide an evolutionary advantage?
  • Why did humans lose all their body hair but keep their scalp hair?

My BA thesis is a step in the right direction, but having the opportunity to dedicate an entire PhD to this would bring this field out of the dark ages. And I do not exaggerate when I say that, a lot of studies published in scientific journals will describe hair in categories such as “wavy”, “woolly”, “blond” “red” despite the fact that we have the methods to describe the detailed morphology and chemically structure of hair - and using these methods would be a much more objective approach to studying it!

But unfortunately, a lot of researchers use categories like the ones described above, or even worse they will divide hair into: “African”, “Asian” and “European” hair, completely ignoring anyone who does not fall into those categories and completely homogenizing the massive numbers of populations which fall within these vast geographic regions.

Answering questions about human hair diversity is part of understanding human phenotypic variation - essentially, it’s part of understanding why we look different. I plan to make sure the public can access and understand all of the work that I do + any relevant information on the evolution of human (hair) diversity through my website.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, there’s even more info on the website humanhairdiversity.com and I will be using the hashtag #HairEvolutionPhD across platforms, follow me on Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to hear more about it. And I would really appreciate it if you can support the campaign in any way you can, since I need to reach a minimum of £430 by the end (or I receive nothing), I can assure you that every little bit helps immensely! So, here is the crowdfunding page again.

Thanks for reading!

Spotlight: Photographer Damion Reid and the “Beauty of the Black Woman” Project.

How do you describe what a black woman is? How do you even begin to define her?

You don’t. You leave that up to her.

As black women, as black people, we are well aware of our complexities - whether inherited or otherwise. What’s more, despite our differences being used to divide and separate us, whether through experience or heritage, history has played out in such a way that we are and will always be connected to each other in ways words cannot even begin to describe. As romantic as this may sound, and though there is so much beauty in who we are, there’s a lot of pain that we are still forced to triumph through. Despite all this, as we combat that which has manifested in our lives through both structural and internal racism, it’s so important that we look for ways to find and recreate ourselves on our terms.

Living in a world where black women have to constantly defend their existence and personally find ways to continuously reaffirm their beauty and self-worth, it’s hard not to love what Damion Reid does.

As a Communications Major, Reid was, to say the least, troubled by the negative images and stories he’d often come across of Black women and Black people in the Diaspora. In the Spring of 2002, armed with his camera and desire to show the multi-faceted reality of Black women, he began approaching women he’d see in public in an attempt to capture the “Beauty of the Black Woman.”

Ridding himself of mainstream notions of what beauty is or is supposed to look like, Reid opted to go for something deeper when approaching women, "I share a spiritual bond with Black Women. They are the only people that can understand what me a Black Male goes through. That is beauty to me. I go with my feelings. If it feels right to approach someone, I will do it."

So far, the responses Reid has received have been incredibly positive and wonderfully surprising, “Sometimes the Women are shocked that I want to photograph them. They were not used to be called beautiful, much less photographed.”

For Reid, this is a “never-ending project.” He does plan on taking things further and is currently working on a project that concerns Black men in the Diaspora.

Closing the loop

I’m back. Mostly. I’ll be delving into my inbox soon and oh boy those replies will be a’coming.

I’ve decided to spend the last 24 days of this year closing the loop on a lot of Johnlock projects. I actually have a lot of open shit out there. Not just ao3 and fics but just things I’ve been working on that somehow connect over to Johnlock. So that’s what I’m doing and then at the start of the year I will give-up writing fanfic for a year to focus on other things. All my prompts will be posted to the prompts tumblr/tag. Arting will only be arted when it’s on the schedule. which brings me to another decision I’ve made and that is to start using a schedule again.

The most successful year of my life (and I’m sad to say it’s been nearly 8 years ago at this point) was when I had a planner. I scheduled things and lived by it. It allowed me to get to the gym (I lot a lot of weight actually), to write, to work and to help others with projects. So I’m going to buy one of those plain ol’ black book calendars and try it out. Not just at the start of the year but over the next few days in order to beta test out time requirements. Time management will save your life yo.

Also I’ve decided to take on a massive project in the future. It is something that came to me after I saw a play and then talked to some actors and then got drunk and texted Amber and was like “OH MY GOD LET’S WRITE A JOHNLOCK PLAY. I CAN GET IT PRODUCED HERE IN NEW YORK CITY AND IT WILL BE AMAZING.” I really want to do it. It’s an entirely feasible option. And it’s kind of a brilliant solution.  You see I have this spec for Sherlock. I keep coming up with BRILLIANT (and I don’t call my writing brilliant so…ya) parts for it. Sometimes I type them and sometimes I don’t. Mostly I don’t because I remember how I can never do anything with the spec. You don’t spec Sherlock. And I really couldn’t spec mine because it’s a true mystery but does end with Johnlock. So what could I do with it? Turn it into a shitty fic of mine? No, that seemed wrong because it was so short-sighted.  And frankly because I am a shit fanfic writer then it would’ve been a waste. Ohhhhh but I can set a scene and I can write dialogue that sings. That I can do. And anyhoo I mentioned how I could do Holmes because he’s public and they said I could do BBC Sherlock.  I was like whaaaa? The actors mentioned parody and that’s how things like the Mario Brothers and Simpsons play can get made and not get shut down. They gave me some numbers to look into. Plus my play would be a limited run of two nights. I could do it. So we’ll see.

Anyhoo now…to the inbox.

Oh. This is a lovely. I just heard a really good quote “Done is better than good” and how you actually end up with good by getting to done and it’s a circle of good and I am excited to try this.

transformativeworks:

Supernatural's 200th episode focused on fangirls. Showrunner Jeremy Carver said “’Over the past couple of years we’ve seen a real, real swing in the number of 13, 14, and 15 year old female [fans] — girl who have been watching the show — and I for one have been really struck by at Comic Con this year [how] most of our questions seemed to come from young women,’ Carver said. ‘And they were really funny and really smart, and they were going toe-to-toe with the boys, and we were like ‘We’ve got to give these women a platform and a voice and a point of view. It just felt like a way to give back.’”

Fangirls are making appearances in not just convention halls & media articles but also canon texts.
