One of the great things about the cinematography in Gone With the Wind is how expansive it feels. In several interior scenes, you’ll notice shots where the ceilings are shown. When you think about it, this is uncommon in a film because it is a pain to have to construct a ceiling and shoot within those additional confines. What the production team did was have the areas above the sets cloaked in black cloth. After filming, an artist watercolored the proper backdrop onto a glass plate, and that was edited in. Brilliant.
