Oh yes, I had forgotten that in the Sherlock fandom, we all are sexist and racist people who spend their time insulting Elementary because of its Watson. How bad of me.
Seriously, stop putting everyone under the same label, its getting tiresome.

TBF it happens a lot in the Sherlock fandom (not quite the Sherlock Holmes fandom and sometimes there is a distinct difference).

My favorite is when the fans write "look and it has nothing to do with her being a woman or a POC but…." which always smacks of "Hey you see I’m prefacing this second statement by pretending like this truthful one made first has NOTHING to do with it. I just feel the need to say it because that means I’m totally not at all thinking this."

Because we all know "It’s nothing to do with the fact that he’s black but I just don’t think Idris Elba would make a good Bond".

Cause ya know stating reasons would be so much harder to write without that preface fo sho’.

Over this past summer, I’ve seen a lot of converts who sat down to watch the show (and not just the pilot because come on we all know pilots are HARD) and were converted to Elementary and that was cool. They understand that it’s not trying to be Sherlock and they enjoyed Elementary for this wonderfully diverse and sometimes kitschy moments.

And guess what? Some people still didn’t like it and that was okay too.

Hell when people say "Hey I don’t like Elementary because the mysteries aren’t good" then I have NOTHING to say to that because they’re right. They aren’t as good. Procedurals are a beast to write well. When people say "I don’t like Elementary because I like more canon Sherlock Holmes stories/elements." then I once again have to agree and say "You’re right Elementary doesn’t match Sherlock in that aspect." but that is RAAAAAAAAARELY what I see when people badmouth it. It usually does come down to this horrible thing of not liking that they made her a woman and not liking the casting choices which just always grates.

At the end of the day television is a business in America. It’s a lucrative business ran on adverts and public consumption. In order to produce 20 odd episodes of television you need to expand stories that even Moffat and Gatiss (and Holmes experts) agree sometimes didn’t quite pan out. We’re not looking to show 9 episodes over 4 years.. We’re looking for that sweet 100 episode mark (and if we’re lucky even more). So things change and characters evolve and people get pissy about it because they only like one fuckin thing and to that I say, “Just fuck off.”

When I can go one day without seeing shit talking in the Elementary tag on tumblr or twitter then I’ll start thinking differently. For fucks sake we had to come up with our own ‘secret’ tag just to be done with the hate. So yeah it happens…a lot. And that ain’t right.
