JOSS WHEDON LITERALLY SAID WE SHOULD NOT USE THE WORD “FEMINIST” AND TRIED TO REDEFINE FEMINISM BASICALLY TALKING OVER ALL THE WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN RALLYING BEHIND THE WORD FOR YEARS AND DECIDING THAT AS A MAN IT WAS HIS PLACE TO DEFINE THE FEMINIST…

I doubt if I’ll change your mind either but I see no reason why we shouldn’t each make our case here. In response to your accusations about my case-

A. I am both a woman and a feminist. I have thrown away more than one relationship with friends, family members, etc. over this issue. I have most certainly withdrawn my support for media and media creators over this issue. My enjoyment of Whedon’s creations has no bearing on my opinion of his personal remarks and views as a man. I would say the same thing about Steve Moffat whose creations I enjoy even as I am critical about his personal statements. As a media major, I am well versed in this so please don’t spring this middle school argument on me. No part of my response to your post mentioned any of his work. To me it’s seems like your trying to discredit my argument by assuming that I wouldn’t defend him if I only knew him by that speech. I would.

B.He mentions SEVERAL TIMES that all of history until now has been stacked against women, has resulted in the feminist movement being necessary. He is not ignoring history here, in fact he’s focused on it for most of his speech.

C. Whedon’s career was made out of raping, torturing and murdering female characters? Really? When? Let’s take Buffy, The Vampire Slayer for example. It ran eight seasons and I saw every episode of them in a chocolate fueled post Christmas binge. Do you know how many women are raped on that show? The only instance I can think of offhandedly was the time when Spike sexually assaulted Buffy, who promptly told him she could never loved him and used that behavior as an example of his soullessness.

It’s possible there were other instances over the long course of the show that I’m not recalling but you know what the thing about women’s lives is? One in four women will be raped by the time they graduate college. It’s a fact of women’s lives that isn’t handled with dignity and care in media often.

I think that showing that even a character as physically powerful and as intelligent and strong-willed as Buffy can be a victim is incredibly powerful for people who have been victims of assault. There was nothing sexy or forgiving about that assault scene. It was a low point that made it unmistakable that Buffy’s relationship with Spike was a form of self harm and that Spike could never be redeemable or likable until he had a soul.

As for torture, WHO WASN’T TORTURED ON THAT SHOW? At some point I’m fairly certain every character was tortured. Angel spent like hundreds of years in a hell dimension and lost the ability to speak and reason for a while as a result. Women are not tortured and saved by men. Women are tortured, yes. Men are tortured, yes. But it’s women who do the saving 9 times out of 10. It’s women who have the power.

But that’s just Buffy, and that was a while ago. What about Firefly? Lots of rape and torture and murder there, right? Well the Reevers rape everybody to death with no distinction between male and female so there’s that. Lots of torture and murder going on there as well. But again, most of that is happening to dudes and none of it is gender specific. River is experimented on but so were all the children in the coed class that she was a part of, and River not only survived but recovered over the course of the show and saved them all more than once. Possibly the most bad-ass chick in the entire series (or ever) was Zoe who was played by a beautiful mixed race actress. Zoe was intelligent, strong, capable and absolutely did not let the white man who captained her ship dictate her life. She was passionately in love with her husband and faithful to him. Of the three main lady characters on that show how many were murdered? Oh, wait, none of them. Zoe’s husband was killed, not Zoe.

But in the Avengers didn’t Loki call Natasha a mewling quim? Yeah, and then she played the trickster god of lies for a dupe, undermined his plans, faced her fears, ran around the city saving people on a broken ankle, and earned the trust and respect of people as suspicious as Nick Fury.

D. You aren’t paying attention. “Genderist” is not meant to be used in place of “feminist” it’s meant to be used in place of “sexist”. It would effectively negate such shittyness as people joking “Am I sexist? Yeah, I’m all about sex!”. It’s an idea. A way of making society look at gender relations differently than they do now by making the sexist ass-hats the ones who are different not the people who think people are people and equal no matter their gender.

E. Genderist is meant to combat misandry at all. Whedon makes no mention of misandry, of men at all really outside of the ones he calls inbred and unevolved because they aren’t feminist. Only you are bringing that up. Why? You know that genderist is essentially the same thing as sexist and that the creation of a new word for it is meant to push upon the social discourse that this is a problem of modern times, not the ’70s, which should be behind us. It’s a different way of phrasing the same idea. That’s what he’s talking about. A different way of calling people sexist that he thinks might be more powerful.

F. Whedon definitely thinks he’s a feminist because he is a feminist. He believes that men and women are equal and deserve equal respect, pay, and dignity, he’s said so multiple times. He’s invited to speak at feminist dinners and events for a reason. He says explicitly that he loves feminists, feminism, and that his point of contention is only with the construction of the word they use. He doesn’t have any problem with the “fem” it’s the “ism” that he thinks is the problem. The ideology not the focus on women’s rights.

G. I am a woman. I am defending my feelings, so fuck off. Also he was ASKED TO SPEAK BY FEMINISTS. He was speaking over no one. He called for others to offer up their ideas and he made a suggestion. That’s it. He never said using the word “feminist” was bad, but he said maybe we could polish things up, maybe we could find a different way to phrase it in order to change the currently convoluted social discourse.

TL;DR, Whedon has done literally nothing wrong here. He was respectful and clear about what his idea was and how he was willing to accept other ideas. Idk what your problem is but as someone who has four years of higher education in analyzing media, specifically through a feminist lens, as a woman who isn’t afraid to call someone a piece of shit even if they made a movie I like, I can’t see any basis to your arguments. At times it seems you purposely convolute Whedon’s intent and my own argument in order to make your case by calling into question my motivations, Whedon’s work (which was external to the discussion, which was only about this speech originally), and by refusing to capitalize his name (disrespectful and lazy, even for Tumblr).

Netflix and Content Sorting: No, Every Black Show Is Not Like Scandal

Really Netflix? Scandal is like all of this content? Where the only immediate noticeable overlap is Kerry Washington is casted in Peeples also? Y’all not even gonna try Netflix? The Boondocks is “more like Scandal?” Really? Scandal is not a “Black show” anymore than Sleepy Hollow is a “Black show.” They have Black female leads and a few Black cast members, but still cast more Whites than any other race. And while I absolutely like some specifically Black content (hi, history matters as to why it should exist), I also like diverse casts (and not only me; research shows it’s liked) and some semblance of sense in my media sorting, Netflix.

I mean, none of these are like Scandal. Not the same content genre. Not the same type of network/time slot or even content type (reality TV vs. romantic comedy film vs. sitcom vs. animated comedy vs. dramatic film vs. a primetime network drama etc.). While their sorting is sketchy overall, and I’ve seen some sketchy sorting for NBPoC media, come on, they are NOT this bad sorting media with White leads. And we already know that Whiteness as a “norm" is so ubiquitous that people don’t consider content that feature all-White casts or White leads as "White" at all, just "mainstream media.”

One of my Twitter followers had me dyin’ laughing when she said "because you liked ‘Half of a Yellow Sun,’ you may like ‘Madea Goes to Jail’" as mocking Netflix-style sorting of Black content. I died laughing. Netflix. Bruh. Sort…better. Try. Hire someone Black to do this…or something.

To be fair… Netflix is LAZY about everything. We’ve all noticed the ridiculous pairings or descriptions.

Let me just load my queues quickly and see.

No, Star Trek Into Darkness is NOTHING like Sherlock but it stars the same lead.

Twin Peaks is nothing like 30 rock. (quirky humor maybe?)

Harlem Nights and Machete Kills (maybe the body count?)

Also Cool Running is nothing like Auction Hunters (I don’t even see how Netflix got there)

From my experience I’ve noticed sort of odd pairings happen with anything Gay, anything British. anything Bollywood, and anything Asian.

Is it right? Ehhh. Is it a huge problem? Ehhhh Is it worth outrage? Ehhhhh.

Netflix is in essence an entertainment device. Your decisions are vastly more important than what it recommends.

Have you ever thought that maybe Darcy just isn't a very positive character for women? Even if she isn't a mary sue, she doesn't do much of anything. At least Jane is smart.

No.  No, I have not.  Because if I had, I’d be, Hey brain, why are you being so fucking stupid today?  Remind me to stab you with a q-tip later, okay?

To recap, let’s discuss what Darcy does:

  • Takes an unpaid internship with a TWO BRILLIANT ASTROPHYSICISTS who totally seem like the type to have someone hang around when they are “stupid”.
  • Recognizes Thor is a danger at first and not only protects herself, but protects all of her friends by tazing the fuck out of him while Erik and Jane are like WHUT IS THIS?!  DANGER?!
  • Helps Jane research shit that most people wouldn’t understand
  • imageOMG A BOOK?  HOW TO USE?!  HOW DO U DO?!  NEED INSTRUCTIONAL DIAGRAM!!
  • Doesn’t turn heel and run when the Destroyer is tearing the shit out of Puente Antiguo, and instead stays and not only tries to help her friends, but also rescues trapped animals (a la the deleted scene).
  • Goes to Norway with Jane and is a computer badass.  (See comics.)
  • image MY HACKER NAME IS FCKUCOULSON!
  • Stays with Jane in London to help her with her research.  Smart enough that Jane trusts her to watch over the equipment.
  • Recruits an intern for herself.
  • Calls for help when Jane gets herself into a pickle, even though she knows Jane will be pissy… because IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
  • imageYOU WERE GONE FOR FIVE HOURS AND CAME BACK WITH AN INFINITY STONE BABY BUMP, DON’T GIVE ME ANY SHIT.
  • Is sassy and completely unflustered with Thor.
  • image
  • Goes and bails Erik out of jail and is kind and gentle with him even though he’s bananaballs.
  • imageTHIS WORKPLACE IS NOT PANTS OPTIONAL (UNLESS U R THOR)
  • Helps Jane figure out what the fuck is going on with the dark elves and all this inter-dimensional bullshit.
  • image FUCK, IF THEY SUCCEED, I WON’T BE ABLE TO SEE WHEN STEVE AND THOR TAKE OFF THEIR SHIRTS.  THIS IS BULLSHIT.
  • Put aside her own fucking safety to help Jane defeat the dark elves and save the UNIVERSE.
  • image FUCK. YEAH.

In conclusion, I have no fucking idea what movies you were watching.  In the little time that Darcy spent on screen, she was functionally smarter than many of her “smart” colleagues, she was LOYAL AND KIND, and funny as hell.  You’re not required to love her, but please cease with the bullshit about how she’s not a positive character.

peek-a-dillo:

Reddit user HeMeYou was left “overwhelmed” by advice from online strangers after accidentally discovering his son might be gay.

The 38-year-old father posed the question to Reddit after finding Google searches on his son’s iPad suggesting he wanted to come out.

He said: “I found out my 13 y/o son is gay… He hasn’t told me, but I want to support him. What can I do?”

I’m 38, and a single dad to my 13 year old son, 14 in four months. The other day I asked my son if I could borrow his iPad and he gave it to me.

After my first attempt at Google searching something I noticed that he forgot to delete his history as a lot of the search terms were along the lines of “I’m gay what now?” etc…

I love him regardless of which gender he loves, in fact when I was slightly older than him I had a few flings with guys, which he doesn’t know about, so I am 100% supportive.

He has seemed slightly down recently, as in, he isn’t as cheerful as he once was, and I desperately want to tell him that I love him regardless of which sexuality he is.

What are my options? Should I wait for him to tell me? Or should I make a few hints at it?

I’m worried that if I don’t hint at it, that he will be worried about something that he really doesn’t have to be worried about… if that makes sense.
Thanks.

Shortly after, he received a flood of supportive messages, with many users offering advice based on their own experiences.

One user posted: “Google ‘how to tell my son I will love and support him no matter what’ and leave it in his search history.”

Another said: “Let him come out on his own terms, just make sure he knows that you’ll support him and you don’t have a problem with it.”

The father, who wished to remain anonymous, told Buzzfeed the response to his post was “overwhelmingly helpful and kind.”

A few days later, HeMeYou posted an update on what he ended up doing:

I started off with talking about general media with him, for instance I mentioned how awesome it was that Tim Cook (CEO of Apple) came out as being gay and I asked him what he thought about it and I was completely expecting him to give a typical teenager response like “yeah.. its good” or something like that but he actually gave me a detailed response which I absolutely loved because for the first time in a good while I’ve actually held a conversation with my son that felt really… rewarding.

I also wanted to talk to him about how I’ve noticed that he’s not been acting as cheerful as he usually has and I sort of gave the cliche spiel of “I love you no matter what and I just want to see you be happy” but I didn’t get much of a response that time apart from “yeah I know..”

The next day as I picked him up from school I thought I’d ask him about any crushes he has, and I wanted to make sure I didn’t say a gender when I asked him, so instead of ‘he’ or ‘she’ I used ‘they’ etc.. Here is that conversation as I remember it…

Me: So, do you have a crush on anyone?
Son: Uhm… no..m..maybe..
Me: Ohhh so who is the lucky person?
At this point he sort of looked at me slightly confused, I’m not 100% sure why, but I’m assuming it is because I said “lucky person” rather than “lucky girl”.
Son: Just someone from my french class…
Me: Oh yeah… so what do you like about them?
Son: Just.. stuff..
Me: Okay.. but.. like what?
Son: I donno they’re just kinda funny I guess…

At this point I dropped the conversation but just before I did I told him “Well, whoever it is, they should be so lucky to have you as a boyfriend..” and while I didn’t see it, I certainly felt as though he was rolling his eyes at my cheesy comments.

At the dinner table the same day, while we were eating we had a couple minutes of silence, not much was heard apart from the cutlery and my son finally said “I actually wanted to tell you something in the car, but I was afraid you’d get in an accident..”

I looked up from my plate and looked at him straight in the eyes… I could see he was thinking about something and all I could think of was “OMG this is it…”

He said “Dad..” with a couple seconds of silence “..I’m gay”.

I looked at him and couldn’t help myself from smiling, and I told him “____, you know I love you so much… right?” and I got up and gave him a huge hug.

He even started to cry on my shoulder and because of that I couldn’t help myself but shed a couple tears.

Concluding his post, he said: “After dinner and after he finished his homework we both lay in our pyjamas on the sofa, while I was watching the Cooking Channel and he was playing on his iPad.

“I had my arm around him and he was leaning his head on my chest, and all I could think of was that I’m the happiest father on earth right now.”

12 year old black boy shot by a white cop for having a BB gun. I’m fucking disgusted. The boy is fighting for his life right now.

This is beyond ridiculous

"The young man".
I like how the reporter corrected him on the spot and said “the boy”.
They use certain words to make us seem older than we are to take away a layer of innocence.

12-year-old boy wielding what turned out to be a BB gun when he was shot by police outside a Cleveland recreation center has died, police union official confirms - @clevelanddotcom

His name was Tamir E. Rice.

He was a child playing with a toy. And he was murdered.

And this fucking asshole white cop has the nerve to call him a “young man.” He’s already trying to justify this - how long before he starts calling this baby a thug, or a gangster?

AND HE WAS A BABY. And white people wanna talk about “it’s not about race.” Remember Tamir and the countless innocent Black lives that have been stolen. While white serial killers and murderers get escorted carefully away. While white people in Target are carrying loaded shotguns and shit. While these white cops/murderers get put on paid leave.
