Fat-shaming may curb obesity, bioethicist says

Today.com: Unhappy with the slow pace of public health efforts to curb America’s stubborn obesity epidemic, a prominent bioethicist is proposing a new push for what he says is an ‘edgier strategy’ to promote weight loss: ginning up social stigma.

Daniel Callahan, a senior research scholar and president emeritus of The Hastings Center, put out a new paper this week calling for a renewed emphasis on social pressure against heavy people — what some may call fat-shaming — including public posters that would pose questions like this:

‘If you are overweight or obese, are you pleased with the way that you look?’

Wow. I’m sure you’ve all seen this girl’s fantastic tardis dress floating around here the last week or so. She hand painted the inside and everything, and she just looks plain great. But of course, I see it posted on facebook, and the slew of comments begin.

I don’t think it’s a mystery as to why I, as a bigger girl, spend the week before a convention crying because I’m so nervous about what people are going to say about me just because I want to dress up and have fun like everyone else. And there is something really, really fucking wrong with that.

This girl is as beautiful as she is clever! If we on Tumblr are only good for one thing, it’s turning situations like this around! Let’s signal boost this and get it back to her so she knows how much we love it! ALLONZ-Y

I think my favorite fat-shamer here is Daniel Marquis, saying “Cool but not particularly attractive.” Remember, ladies: your pursuits are meaningless if you can’t express them in a way that’s sexually pleasing to all men.

“My local library branch started doing this “Blind Date with a Book” thing, thought you guys might like it. The shelf was full when we got there, but was like this as we were leaving. The books are wrapped in paper and have different designs on them, and then a few words vaguely describing the subject matter of the book. Things like “Drama”, “Plot Twists”, “espionage”, etc. The only thing exposed on the book is the barcode that you use to scan the book out. I thought it was a pretty cool idea.”

mrstoughman:

Martin Scorsese designed each year in the film to look just the way a color film from that time period would look. Achieved mainly through digitally enhanced post-production, Scorsese recreated the look of Cinecolor and two-strip Technicolor. Watch in particular for the scene where Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) meets Errol Flynn (Jude Law) in the club. Hughes is served precisely placed peas on a plate, and they appear blue or turquoise - just as they’d have looked in the primitive two-strip Technicolor process. As Hughes ages throughout the film, the color gets more sophisticated and full-bodied.

Day Eight: Favourite Female Character in a Comedy Show

As if I could settle on one!

From beginning to end we have April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza on Parks & Rec); Nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes on Scrubs); Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown on Community); Annie Edison (Alison Brie on Community); and the godmother of badassery Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad on The Cosby Show)

Great list.

So at work we were tasked with recreating a movie scene.

We’re in New York. Our boss lives in the upper eastside. We have the vast New York City just waiting for us out there.

They chose to do the elevator scene from Hangover.

I am disgruntled.

I love everything about this photoset

The lack of condescension in cultural sharing

The nonsexualization

The contextual foreignness of firm breasts in a society that doesn’t use bras

I just smiled the whole photoset through.
