Things I learned from being super poor.

So this is in response to those lists going around telling you what you need in your apartment when you just start out and they really struck a nerve. For me they are frustrating to see for someone who has to live through having nothing. And then people who say that if you can’t afford those things then you shouldn’t be living on your own are utter assholes. You have no idea what a person’s journey is and why they may need to live on their own/leave their past circumstances. So here is my list/lessons/info.

For my own history I’m pretty liberal with admitting that I grew up very, very poor. Not as poor as certain people in other areas but definitely poor with regards to typical American standards. Yes, my siblings and I had to pick up cans to trade it so our mom would have money to buy food so we could eat that night.  Now I am someone who habitually donates (more than my husband wants but) to others because I have the means to do so.

So I came from almost nothing. I know what it’s like. Feel free to PM me if you have further questions on how super fun it is to be super poor bruh.

This list is very American-centric and I’m sorry about that but I’ve only been poor here.

So first a few pieces of information:

Total cost on this is $25.00 and will get you through your first week and thereafter.

I JUST GOT MY OWN PLACE/ROOM/ETC. NOW WHAT?

If you’ve moved into an apartment it’s possible that you have hardly anything in the bank (if you even have an account) or that you’re overdrawn. First off if you’re overdrawn don’t freak out, just try your best to not use the account anymore until you’re in the clear again. Also if  can’t quality for a bank account.

BANK ACCOUNTS

Netspend.com works with meta bank. You get a routing number, debit card, and their fees are pretty low. You get your funds directly deposited so you don’t have to pay that 2% check cashing fee. You also get paid EARLY! Your company transmits money early so even if netspend is supposed to release the money to you on Friday they’ll release it to you on as early as Tuesday night. THAT IS SUPER HELPFUL BRO.  It costs 10 dollars a month to maintain the account but you can go as low as having -10.00 in the account and they won’t charge you a fee for that. You won’t get dinged with overdraft protection. It’s basically like having cash but without the allure of having overdraft protection to abuse.

WORRIED ABOUT YOUR SHIT GETTING STOLE?

If you’ve found a place in a poor side of town then you may worry about security. Get a backpack. You can’t carry all your belongings with you but you can make sure you take your laptop, phone, etc. It’s worth carrying around for the peace of mind when you know there are constant break-ins in the area you’re living in.

BAD Credit and Need a place to live?

If you have shitty credit through bad decisions in life (oh those fun college credit cards they give you even though you don’t have a job) then you can still find a place to rent. Look for “second chance renter programs” via google or in your local area newspapers/apartment renter books. Those are the people who take everyone as long as you actually have a job.

Shoplifting

if you’re poor and really need stuff is it okay? No. I’m gonna say absolutely not. Most of us aren’t Val Jean. We don’t need it that bad. PLUS if you get caught then it fucks you up with regards to jobs, etc. There are other options. Such as dumpster diving/freegan. Again this is in extreme circumstances when you have no money and you are super poor bro. But it does happen and be aware of the options.

Need internet access/can’t afford it?

Libraries aren’t just for homeless people to take a poop. They’re brilliant for use of the internet and also you will want to use the library for entertainment. Also places like work commissions/unemployment offices usually have pcs available for work searches but also you can use it for other things.

Need a laptop but can’t afford one

Pawn shops. You’re not investing in a laptop that will last you six years but definitely for six months. I once bought a laptop for 100 bucks and it lasted me a year. It might still work but I got a better job and things turned around and I bought a new laptop. It was super old but it did what I needed to do in the moment.

NEVER USE RENT-A-CENTER FOR ANYTHING EVER. NEVER USE  AARON’S FOR ANYTHING EVER. NEVER USE FINGER-HUT FOR ANYTHING EVER.

Trust me. I have friends and family who got caught up in the easy credit of those stores but you end up wasting so much money. You will end up paying 1400 for something that cost 300.  That is how they make money. They are bad places. It doesn’t seem like much at first.  It’s only a few bucks a month. Not bad right? No. You will sometimes pay 20 times what something is worse. Those places prey on the poor. JUST DON’T

Looking for a job with no experience?

Obviously you want to find something that pays a lot and you work long hours. Long hours at work means you are using someone else’s heating or air conditioning and that’s a good thing especially if you’re just trying to make it. If you’re inexperienced then become a server/waiter/busboy. Anything that makes tips is great because they’ll hire almost anyone and you get to go home with money in your pocket. If you’re living day to day then often times the money you make that day is the money you use to feed yourself that night. Also if you work in a restaurant/fast food place typically you are allowed meals there. It’s not an all you can eat buffet but typically you’re allowed one meal per day at the place of business. Most places are okay with you getting more than that but at the very least you know you have one meal. Sometimes that’s all you get that day but you won’t starve.  Your next step up from there should be some kind of office job. It may seem impossible but you can get data entry jobs (rare but still out there, in fact a friend of mine just interviewed for one), customer service jobs (they train you), and mailroom jobs. A lot of places say they want experience for all of those but typically you can get in even if it’s your first job. Or if you’ve been a server then you actually do have experience with all of those. GOOGLE how to make a decent resume. Lots of options out there. Worse case scenario fuckin ask me and I’ll help you. I’ve worked in human resources so I know how to make you look good. I review all my friends resumes. There is an art to it.

USE GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS. THEY DO NOT MAKE YOU A LAZY PERSON.

I wish I had told myself that earlier. Pride is silly when it comes to that. If you can qualify for food stamps then damn well use them because they are there as a step up.  Use them to help feed yourself. It’s harder to qualify for cash assistance but food stamps is a relatively easy process in most states. Loads even allow you to apply online and do a phone interview to qualify and then it’s done. So why not? You gotta eat.

RAMEN NOODLES? FUCK YES RAMEN NOODLES.

There is a reason they are popular in colleges and in poorer households. Now if you’re trying to watch your sodium intake due to health issues then ramen is not for you and I’d have to encourage you to try other options such as freeganism to find the items you want. But you can live off ramen noodles for a very long time. At 10-25 cents for a meal is your best bet. That means if you’re a waiter and some shitty person leaves you a dollar tip then you can be happy they bought you a few packs of noodles. Also mentally call them a shitty person but be nice outwardly because maybe they can’t afford more. And you never know who is watching. I was offered jobs because of my attitude as a waitress.

Sugar Daddy/ Sugar Momma/Someone to help pave the way in return for a certain relationship.

For me I found these are not good situations and can often be harmful. I know certain people want them and need them but if you’re out on your own and trying to make it then this is not good for you. Does it make you a bad person if you end up in one of these situations? No. Should you try to get out of it as soon as possible? Yes. Remember you do you.

Giving Blood for money.

Blood plasma is the way to go. If you’re in a larger city then there are places who will pay you for your donation. You’re helping and getting a little money. Typically not much money but some. In the place I lived it was 30 dollars and you could give only give twice in a 7 day period but hey that’s 60 bucks in a 7 day period. Typically the wait is the killer. Some companies do it incremental. You get 10 for the first time 15 for the second and so forth. They want you to keep coming back. Also you get a cookie and juice so score if you’re super poor.

Making money online?

Making money online is hard unless you’re a great writer and you develop a following or if you’re a good personality on you tube. But there are a lot of freelance websites out there who will pay you. If you got the time and a decent web connection go there and put in very low bids and get experience then up your rate as time goes on. Say you pull in 25 dollars a week for time you were gonna spend online looking at shit then that’s 100 extra bucks in your pocket and helps pay the rent. You can also apply to be a camgirl/boy. When looking at those options remember to chose wisely. If you want more info on being a cam girl then I have friends who can help you out with more information. I encourage you to research the hell out of those things and know yourself before signing up.

Paying rent late?

TRY not to. Many places charge you a late fee after the first day and all charge you a late fee after the 5th. It only gets higher the later you pay.  Even if you have to pawn your tv or laptop or anything for a week then do it. It’s worth it to avoid those late fees which will pile up way worse than the interest on a small pawn shop loan.

Pay day Advances?

Oh God please , please, please try to avoid them. Certain states even outlaw them because they are truly horrible things. You get stuck in a vicious cycle. ONLY if you get in a shitty situation and you truly know you can pay it back fully on the next check then do it. Otherwise PLEASE try to avoid at all costs.

Can’t pay a bill. Don’t know what to do?

First off is it a bill or a situation? If you went to the emergency room and they sent you a bill then it is just a piece of paper. I work in finance now so trust me I know how vitally important good credit is but sometimes you have to let it take a hit. Sometimes you can’t pay the bill now. You have to let it go. If it’s a situation such as you need money to fix your car to get to work then that’s different. That is when you go for the shitty option of pay day advances. But I’ve seen so many people requesting help because they got an unexpected bill and all I can think is…just don’t fuckin pay it. If you can’t afford it then don’t pay it unless you can’t avoid paying it. Annoying phone calls from bill collectors? Who cares. Pay it when you can. I cleared my credit up later and not to toot but I’m rockin near 800 now. This is someone who couldn’t afford a 30 dollar bill back in the day. Sometimes you just have to ignore the bill. You’re not going to debtor’s prison. You’re just going to get a hit on your FICO and get called/sent letters. It will affect you later. But in the moment remember what is necessary–food, water, shelter, job. If it doesn’t affect any of those things then move the fuck on.

Now onto the fuckin list of things you honestly need in your apartment if you are starting out with nothing.

1) YOU  and your will to survive and make a better life for yourself. Focus on the fact as often as possible. This is but a moment and you are doing what you have to move forward in life. You too could one day be casually browsing Hawaiian vacation packages as you’re writing about things you learned while being poor. Seriously you do have a leg up being in America. So have faith in yourself.

2) Dishes A  plate (or bowl if you can’t afford both). I prefer bowls.  Fork, Spoon, Knife. You can get all of these things for 1 dollar at any of your local dollar stores. You can also typically get a lunch box tupperware set that includes all of those in plastic form for 1 dollar. So you get the bowl with lid, and a fork/spoon/knife for one dollar. A cup (coffee mug really is helpful because you can also use it as a second bowl if you’re desperate).
Total minimum cost $2.00

3) Cleaning Products for yourself and your home. Again go do the dollar store or wal-mart. Sometimes wal-mart has the same items as the dollar store does but for 3 cents less. Such as dish-washing liquid. Wal-mart typically has a version that ranges from .88 to .97. You need to wash your dishes with soap for a variety of reasons. Also you need to clean yourself. Bath soap isn’t as fun as the liquid gel but it lasts longer. Those six bars will last you for months. So if you’re poor use that.  You can use the soap as a double to wash your clothes but you’re not going to want to do that unless things are desperate. So buy a $1.00 bottle of detergent.  Bleach is also very help for cleaning around the house so you’ll want that too for toilets and showers and disgusting things so pick that up as well. Also buy toothpaste and a toothbrush. You can typically find those in combos but its better to buy them separate unless you luckily find a full tube giving away a toothbrush. I also encourage you to buy a kitchen towel.  You’ll spill things and paper towels run out quickly. Trashbags for trash (you don’t need the can until you can afford it) Also a bath sponge to clean yourself. One dollar or if you catch a sale then you can get one for .35 cents at places like CVS or Wal-mart or again the dollar store.
Total minimum cost $7.88 to $9.00

4) Two towels. Now towels range in quality but you’re hella poor so you want to get the cheapest ones. Again dollar store here or if wal-mart is having a sale then pick them up here.  I say two but you can get by with one if you’re desperate but really two is gonna be your savior. You can also end up using one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. Or one for cleaning and one for drying.
Total minimum cost $2.00

5) A place to sleep. I read on the other one that you’re gonna try to avoid it but you gotta have a bed. That’s not true. It just isn’t. Buying a bed is a whole ordeal. Unless you have a truck then you can’t just easily pick one up off of craigslist as 99% of those ads are for you to pick it up. If you have a friend who has a truck then you’re in a much better position than I was so definitely try for that option. I was on my own  and so I write this from someone who did everything for herself. Buying a bed means getting it delivered. That means more money out of pocket. So if you can afford a bed and only a bed try to find places that offer free delivery. If you’re able to go rummage sale shopping then try to stay close to home and then see if you can finagle the people into delivering it for you. If you can’t get a bed then it’s fine. It really is. The first place I slept in my place was on a bed of my own clothes, eventually I moved to an air mattress, then to a futon, and finally to a bed. It takes time to get there. I’m not saying it’s the best option but I think the only thing you truly need is a pillow or something to make into a pillow and a blanket (unless it’s hot). So I’m going to put the minimum at the price for those items.
Total minimum cost $10.00

Total cost $25.00 (including two dollars for noodles).

This is what you need desperately to start. This will get you through your first week. From here you can grow to more. Pick up things incrementally. You are building a life and all the other shit is not necessary until you’re in a different position. Shit takes time. Struggling is hard. But  you can do it. I write this not to the people who can afford to buy a rocking chair. I write this to the poor people. I have been there and if you’re reading this fully then you are there. You can get out. It’s HARD but you can do it. I will say a prayer for anyone reading this and feel free to send me an ask if you need more advice. I just wanted to write this because the struggle is long and hard but something many of us have to face.

Good luck.

I find the Rose thing to be crazy. Didn’t people hate on Martha enough for a lifetime. And thing is she isn’t quite a Mary Sue and she’s extremely capable in her own right. Honestly I’d watch an adventures of River Song show and yeah Alex Kingston is timeless hotness. I just. I think it’s the Moffat hate that flavors the character. I’d be interested to learn if any die hard mary morstan fans hate River Song.

Honestly there is so fuckin much to hate about tumblr. I don’t know how I’m still here.

I fully expect the next Sherlock fan con to end in wank about how many of us fic artist/writers are obvs okay with murder since we are always killing people off in our various art forms. And the podficcers/podcasters even talk about it…those sick bastards.

As much as I love Empire’s success I worry when I see things like this. What is it? Oh it’s a lil instructional video to explain black words to da white folk. And there’s so many times certain people imitate Cookie that it gets uber close to offensiveness. It’s like Robin Williams and his black guy voice. Like I love that man. I truly do but like go listen to Wyatt Cenac’s WTF podcast interview and you’ll see what I mean. It’s just this nagging worry of inviting people to see any version of a culture will end in a joke. Ya feel?
