I think the nicest thing I’ve ever done ( or that comes to my mind from my perspective) is sitting and talking to someone one day.
She was a co-worker
She was sat on a couch in our break area
She had the saddest look on her face and I knew something was very, very wrong.
Now I’ll be honest that I didn’t care for her.
She always seemed particularly whiny to me
But her face…
She had this thousand yard stare as if she just couldn’t figure out how to get up and walk again
So I sat down next to her and asked her
“What’s going on?”
And she just poured out so much to me.
She wasn’t happy
She wasn’t sure where her life had gone wrong
She was 50 and divorced and poor and she just couldn’t believe it had come to this
She had once had so much potential and she threw it all away
She hated what had become of her life
I listened and responded and comforted
And finally said, “You’re not dead. You can still do anything. You didn’t throw your potential away. You can still do ANYTHING you want. Until you stop breathing there is always potential to do amazing things.”
And she listened
And she nodded
And she smiled
And then our break time was over and it was time to get back to work
And that Friday she quit
I’ve no idea what became of her
I really hope she’s out in the world doing amazing things.
