LifeStraw purifies water instantly and inexpensively: it is a solution that can provide millions of under-privileged people with safe drinking water.

reblogging again because science

Seriously, Science. Do your thing.

IT’S ONLY 20$.
OH MY GOD

I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR TUMBLR TO GET WIND OF THIS

I’ll always signal boost this because not only does this work for people in under privilege areas it’s also proof of human ingenuity.

Really, we kids that grew up in the early 90s were all told about how we had to conserve water because drinkable water was such a rare resource and people in foreign lands were basically fucked up the ass because there was no way for them to get drinking water. 20 years and 20 bucks later one of the biggest problems humanity faced is a non issue. THAT’S FUCKING CRAZY!

Somebody should start one of those online donate things where people can donate money to buy these to send to areas with unsafe drinking water. But somebody other than me should do it because I don’t know how to do that kind of thing or get the word out.

this is amazing

FYI to everyone, if you purchase a LifeStraw through EarthEasy, they will send you a LifeStraw and also send one to the Philippines (through the Rotary Water Projects) so that the victims of Typhoon Haiyan can have safe drinking water. So if you were thinking of buying one, buy through them, not Amazon. It’s the same price.

Follow-up to above, you also can donate directly to the LifeStraw fundraiserhere without needing to buy one for yourself. You have drinking water right now. You can wait to get this. They cannot.

supermarvelled:Once a superhero, always a superhero.

I just read your post about how the book almost never happened, and I'm so GRATEFUL to you for taking charge of the printing/distribution at the end. I was especially awed by the fact that you decided to fund everything from your own personal finances. I'm now deeply curious... what is so unattractive about crowd-funding fests (kickstarter, etc) that made it preferable to risk your own money for the printing, rather than reach out for help from the community? Less risk somehow? Efficiency?

I’m going to share this with everyone, since I’ve found there’s not really a lot of “why to NOT do a Kickstarter” on the web these days. Everyone seems to think it’s an obvious easy answer for funding a project like this but I found it quite the opposite; it’s much more complicated than it seems, particularly if you are not a financial minded person (like myself).

Cut for very tl;dr post…

unlockedcon:

Unlocked is an unofficial, free, online convention for Sherlock fans who won’t be able to go to this year’s official convention.

As part of Unlocked, we’ll be making hosted chat room time slots available to anyone who’d like to lead a discussion, Q&A, trivia, fic rec session, or other live online “panel” on (just about) any Sherlocky topic.

You don’t need to be fandom-famous, you just need to be willing to commit a few hours and put in a little work preparing your topic ahead of time. We’ll find a place on the schedule for everyone who can do that.

To submit a panel, fill out the submission form here.

If you’d like to host a panel but need some inspiration, check out this big list of suggestions.

For more info on #UnlockedCon, visit the Tumblr.

I am doing this. I hope others will join in.

captainwatsons:

Can we please talk about their reactions? Mummy Holmes keeps talking as if Sherlock stepping on furniture is nothing out of the ordinary, and Dad Holmes is so exasperated by it… his reaction reminds me a lot of… John.

Now, I know there are quite a lot of metas out there about the obvious parallels between Mr Holmes and John, but this is one of those scenes that made the similarity between them click in my head. The reason is that despite the fact that he looks a bit annoyed, in the next takes he seems to just accept what his son is doing, just like John reacts to what Sherlock’s actions.

Also, about Mummy Holmes, she’s a sweeter, more open version of what I suspect Sherlock will be like when he retires and goes to live in the country (at least from what he know thanks to acd canon). She’s the most talkative of the two, just like Sherlock, and constantly relies on the support of her husband as she speaks, as if he were her audience. We all know Sherlock and John have the same dynamic, so it really wouldn’t surprise me if at the end of the series we get a scene of the two of them like this: together, finishing each other’s sentences and basically talking about their day to day life.

Fic writing questions!

So reblog this if I can pop into your box and ask you questions about writing (You can probably make a version for art, too). And you can ask them to me if you really want to.

1. Which is your favorite of the fics you've written for X fandom?
2. Favorite piece overall?
3. Which was the hardest to write, in terms of plot?
4. Which has the most "you" in it, however you'd define that?
5. What is an image/set of images that you're particularly proud of?
6. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?
7. Least favorite plot point/chapter/moment?
8. Favorite plot point/chapter/moment?
9. Favorite character to write?
10. Favorite line or lines of dialogue that you've written
11. If I'm showing off just one of your pieces to someone, which one should it be?
12. What WIPs do you have going now? Are you excited about them?
13. Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute? (So-and-so dies, they don't actually kiss, main character has long extended ballet-based dream sequence, etc.)
14. Would you want to write canon for any of your fandoms (like be hired by showrunner to do an episode)? Which one?
15. Does font matter to you when you're writing a draft?
16. 3 favorite comments ever received on fanfic.
17. Any mean comments? How'd you deal with it? Who laid the smackdown?
18. If you could go back and revise one of your older stories, which would it be?
19. Do you make up scenes at work/on the bus/at the gym? Who are the characters that pop up the most? Do you write them down?
20. Go nuts, and talk about writing.

In all the fanfics I’ve read (over 3,500 but I’ve stopped counting now) , this is my most favorite moment. Sometimes I re-read the whole fic just to get to this moment. It’s so full of….everything, just everything. And it’s perfection.

I expect really good answers to that question you guys.
