sancophaleague:

Recently I was in the shopping mall  and I happened to hear a conversation between some people discussing their dislike for this black girl’s hairstyle who had just previously walked by. One of them called the girl’s  hairstyle “ghetto”, then followed up by saying  “I hate when black girls put all them colors in their hair”. It led me to ask this question, what is ghetto really?  Because I have seen similar hairstyles with Caucasian women never labeled as ghetto. The word “ghetto” has a negative stigma attached to it and it seems like ghetto has become synonymous for “Black People”.
What determines whether something is Ghetto or not? Why do some people consider one ghetto and not the other? Is being crafty with the supplies available to me ghetto?  Is being creative while black unacceptable? Does the price of something determine whether you should consider it ghetto or not? Or maybe I’m wrong…. Please do share your thoughts….

@hated_logic

You’re exactly right. Just like when Black people improvise, it’s ghetto, but let a middle-to-upper class white person do it, it’s a lifehack, or being thrifty, or economical, or thinking out of the box, or brilliant, or whatever.

I will never understand people who say their dash is full of hate. No one is holding a gun to your head. Unfollow these people. Unfollow me if I do or say something that bothers you. LIFE WILL GO ON.

Don’t follow this or that blog because they’re popular. Don’t follow a blog because they follow you. Don’t follow people that are not bringing you something you need or want in your life. Just DON’T.

I rarely see BS going down on my dash because I just don’t tolerate it. Why would I?

Does that mean I will unfollow someone with a different opinion? YES!

Sometimes if we can’t agree to a point where the disagreement remains civil then you gots ta go.

People feel that is the act of a sheltered coward? Ya know what? Coward any day where I don’t feel I’m being attacked or am learning to hate the fandom that I once cherished.

JUST CLICK THE BUTTON. JUST DO IT. IT IS OKAY.

Or here is a tip— When I find that I am unsure of an unfollow them then I TS their username for a few days. It’s my own penalty box. If after a few days they still aren’t bringing anything to my dash then I say goodbye.

There are millions of blogs on tumblr. Someone will fill that void eventually.  And maybe later you can be friends but sometimes you gotta walk away.

This is your life. Why would you ever keep someone or something around who isn’t enriching it in some way?

alimarko:

We Speak is a poster and blog campaign featuring ten young women who are speaking up about their relationships with mental health and how it informs their identities. Part of Launch: Stamps School of Art and Design’s Senior Thesis Exhibition at the University of Michigan, it will be featured at Work Gallery - Ann Arbor in the exhibition opening on Friday, April 18th from 6-9. The show will remain up through May 3rd.

In the past year, the ten young women featured in the poster portion of We Speak came face to face with the state of our mental health. Our stories, carefully and honestly written, are meant to start a conversation about a topic that many of us wish we could ignore. But these are our realities, and in sharing them, we want to start chipping away at the stigma that often keeps us feeling weak and alone.

In addition to the original ten participants, everyone is encouraged to consider sharing their own story about mental health. By contributing your experiences, you can help open the discussion about the importance of mental health and tear down the stigma that keeps it so hidden. By sharing this project, you can foster support.

Nina Simone-1976 - how it feels to be free

This is a longer/live version of the song that I’ve been listening to  almost non-stop for hours.  The song has been covered a lot but really Nina’s version is the best to me. This longer version shows sort of the variety of emotions and freedoms she/the writer is expressing with this song. One of the freedom’s discussed is in connection with the Civil Right’s movement and the song was one of the anthems of that time. The lyrics are quite compelling. The best known version of her singing the song is here. Give them both a listen.

I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
I wish I could break
All the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I should to say
Say ‘em loud say ‘em clear
For the whole round world to hear

I wish I could share
All the love that’s in my heart
Remove all the bars
That keep us apart
I wish you could know
What it means to be me
Then you’d see and agree
Everyone should be free

I wish I could give
All I’m longin’ to give
I wish I could live
Like I’m longin’ to live
I wish I could do
All the things that I can do
Though I’m way overdue
I’d be starting anew.

I wish I could be like a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be
If I found out I could fly
I’d soar to the sun
And look down at the sea
And I sing ‘cause I know

RIP  … Bob Hoskins dies aged 71.

Bob Hoskins, the British actor who starred in The Long Good Friday, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and many more, has died aged 71.

The actor Bob Hoskins has died aged 71. His agent said that he passed away on Tuesday, surrounded by his family, suffering from pneumonia. He retired in 2012 following a diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease in the autumn of 2011.

One of Britain’s best-loved actors, Hoskins was known for his gruff bonhomie, and career that spanned more than 30 years. He first found fame on the small screen in Dennis Potter’s Pennies from Heaven, and then in cinemas as a London gangster-turned-businessman in The Long Good Friday (1980).

Hoskins had leading roles in Brazil (1985), Mona Lisa (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) and Mermaids (1990) and Super Mario Bros (1993) – which he described in a 2007 Guardian interview as "the worst thing I ever did".

Many will also remember him fondly for a series of adverts shot in the late 80s and early 90s for BT with his catchphrase, “It’s good to talk”. He teamed up with Shane Meadows for Twenty Four Seven (1997) and A Room for Romeo Brass (2000), and winning much acclaim for his role in Atom Egoyan’s Felicia’s Journey (1999).

Most recently, Hoskins was seen in Made in DagenhamSnow White and the Huntsman and Outside Bet. On the set of that film, about the Wapping newspaper dispute in the mid-80s, Hoskins told the Guardian why he kept on working: “There’s always someone who rings up and says: ‘Now Bob, before you go, there’s a cracking little swansong for you’.”

Oh yeahhhh

Okay so I love this photoset but why not list them here, too? I can’t be the only one who doesn’t watch TV until it’s like 5-10 years out of date… :)

Annie Jump Cannon - “Cannon was known for her diligence and skill in addition to her enthusiasm and patience. She classified more than 225,000 stars, and her work was published in the Henry Draper Catalogue over the course of nine volumes between 1881 and 1924.

"In 1911, Cannon became the curator of astronomical photographs at Harvard Observatory. She worked at astounding efficiency and was able to classify up to three stars a minute. In the 1920s, Cannon cataloged several hundred thousand stars to the 11th magnitude. She discovered 300 variable stars, in addition to 5 novae, a class of exploding stars.”

Henrietta Swan Leavitt - “Whilst recording and cataloguing the data on her variable stars, Leavitt found that she could accurately and consistently relate the period of a given star’s brightness cycle to its absolute magnitude. The discovery of this simple and hitherto-unknown relationship made it possible, for the first time, to calculate their distance from Earth. Henrietta Leavitt had just become, in the words of George Johnson, author of the book Miss Leavitt’s Stars, ‘the woman who discovered how to measure the Universe’.”

"Some of those closer to the heart of Leavitt’s discovery profited too – not least Edward Pickering, who as director of the Harvard College Observatory claimed the right of superiority over his minion by publishing her findings in his own name, effectively taking most of the credit. The statement, which appeared in a Harvard Circular in 1912, referred to Leavitt only as the person who had ‘prepared’ it. Pickering’s successor at the observatory, Harlow Shapley, gained fame six years later when he built on Leavitt’s discovery of the period-luminosity relation to redefine our knowledge of the Milky Way. Leavitt, without whose findings his would have not been possible, was once again barely mentioned.”

I don’t have cable, so probably their names were mentioned in the episode of Cosmos that these screencaps are from (I hope so!). But even so… I wish that when people called attention to oversights like this that they also did the work to help correct them.

Also Annie Jump Cannon is a FABULOUS name. It’s shameful that any of us can ever forget it.

A lot of her is me. I`ve had this broad under my belt for five years. I own her - and nobody can tell me that I don`t own her. I love every single dimension and component of her being. Her nobility, her flawed character, her laughter, her love of the absurd, her love of the unknown, her love of science… I`ve loved her great heart, her formidable spirit, her guts. She has a much better mind than mine, and a gifted imagination as well, but she`s a little prickly, and certainly not without ego. She has this profound sense of humanity: she can talk to anybody and they listen.
