You literally get so much done when you’re not on tumblr. Like a full list of shit gets done. It’s amazing how that works.

Tumblr may be the worst time suck in the history of the internet.

Tell me about it, it’s like a competition I hold with myself every day to see how long I can stay away and get done before I open my computer.

I need to start doing that. It probably doesn’t help that I wake up and immediately load tumblr on my phone.

I really like how you seem to organize your time too. Staying off tumblr probably helps quite a bit with that.

I can’t tell which of these are supposed to be embarrassing.  I am so musically clueless I cannot even tell if you’re making fun of the 5 songs I have on my iPhone or if you’re just supremely jealous not to have such exquisite taste like me.

But you only have five songs. I just…as a music person I’m so shocked by it. As soon as I saw that I thought “BUT HOW?”  I think my first 128k mp3 player held at least 20 songs. I don’t have any device that doesn’t have lots of music on it. I just…. what do you listen to when you’re on a journey? Do you not listen to music? Does music not move you? Do you not constantly have a new favorite song? Does music come on during a tv show or movie and you think “meh”? It’s so confusing to me…. music is life sooooo I just…not judging. I’m just so confuzzled. It’s like milk in a bag. It’s confusing.

They’re a good five songs. I’m just shocked by the low amount. It’s like eating only 5 potato chips.

My most embarrassing song up there would probably be Miley Cyrus and maybe Burlap to Cashmere because it reveals I listen to contemporary Christian music which is mocked quite a bit.

Edit: On second read this sounds soooo judgey but I was just immediately confused is all. It was all blink, blink what?

Oh! What interesting questions, and I don’t feel judged at all (and in return,  I’m not even judging your embarrassing music choices - I’m sure your tastes are beyond exquisite!)

What do I listen to when I’m on a journey? It depends. I listen to podcasts (I love podcasts), I might listen to these 5 songs if I need make myself walk fast to catch a connecting flight and I want to pretend I’m Benedict with the Paparazzi chasing him down). I may listen to Cabin Pressure. If I’m trying to sleep or read a research article on a plane, I’ll listen to Bach (I adore his Cello Suites).  Sometimes I’ll listen/watch past episodes of Sherlock.  All of this is on my iPad, but more often than not I don’t listen to anything at all because I’m reading, and listening to anything with the human voice in it really distracts me while I’m reading. (And I hate being distracted when I’m reading!)

In fact, when I travel, I usually load up my iPad with fic to read because that’s what I’m going to turn to. I never load it up with new music. Narrative engages my mind or shuts down the angry/frustrated/nervous voices in my head. Music cannot.

Do you not listen to music? I do listen to music and I have more on my computer, but it’s more about setting a mood. I will listen to bouncy dance music when I have to clean and I’m bored. I listen to Christmas music nonstop from the middle of November until the tree comes down because it gives me a holiday feeling. I sometimes play Sinatra or Martin or whomever when I have some friends over (which almost never happens) and we’re drinking cocktails.

Does music not move you? Not in the way a good story does. If I’ve read a really amazing book or piece of fanfiction or watched an incredible movie or show, I can ruminate on it for hours. It will keep me up at night and come back to me and I’ll find myself daydreaming about it. It may even leave me wrecked for several days. Stories leave me aching and sobbing and alive. Music cannot ever touch me like that. The only kinds that do come close might be the occasional classical piece experienced live.

Music does, however, make me want to dance. The right kind of beat, the right kind of playful joyousness makes me want to just hit the dance floor and just dance until my sides ache and my hair is sweaty.

Do you not constantly have a new favorite song? Nope. But when I find a favorite new song, it stays my favorite for a long while and I can listen to it on constant repeat for hours. Cher’s Believe was one. So was Lady Gaga’s Poker Face.

Does music come on during a tv show or movie and you think “meh”? I don’t know if I’ve ever had that feeling. I am such a visual person that I often don’t hear the music until I just listen to a TV show without watching it. This happened for the Sherlock episodes since I would listen to them over and over while cleaning my apartment and doing laundry (without watching) them and only became aware of just how moving some of the music was when I was no longer being distracted by the nuances of Benedict’s and Martin’s facial features or camera movement or lighting choices. It’s only really loud tv or movie music that I even notice at all when watching (e.g. the dub step version of the Sherlock theme from TSOT, but that was really in your face and replaced all speaking).

I’m just so confuzzled. It’s like milk in a bag. It’s confusing. My grandparents in Canada always had milk in a bag, and it’s actually excellent. No big plastic or paper carton to squish after you’re done.

It sounds like music just doesn’t play the same role for me as it might for you.

"Narrative engages my mind or shuts down the angry/frustrated/nervous voices in my head."

I am with you there. It’s why I can’t listen to music at night. I have to listen to tv, podcasts, or audio books to sleep.

I find is fascinating that you mostly listen to things with a narrative. It takes some focus to listen to those things and I’d think you’d get frustrated if you had to start/stop it during travel.

It’s so confusing to me. I’ve always felt that music was indeed a universal language but I guess it isn’t for everyone.  I am happy to know you do notice the music sometimes.

But bag milk will never make sense.

Thanks for enlightening me.
