sunteaflower:

We call ships ‘she.’ We call our war machines ‘women.’ We compare women to black widows and vipers. And you’re going to tell me it’s not ‘lady-like’ to scream, to take up space, to fight and demand respect and do whatever the hell I want. You’ve looked at nuclear bombs and been so in awe that you could only name them after women. Don’t try to down-play my power.

A Moment of Pride:

My LadyLove and I went out for dinner tonight, and the waiter, a graying man named Lou, asked us, “Are you a couple?” We said yes. His face lit up. “Are you going to the Pride parade or anything tomorrow? I’ve been with my partner for eighteen years, and we love going.”

I told him that we would love to go, but that we aren’t able to be fully out to the entire world just yet. We said we are planning to go NEXT year, though.

After dinner was finished, Lou brought us this beautiful dessert, with a lit candle on top.

"Happy Pride, ladies," he said. "This is on me. Since you can’t go to Pride tomorrow, you can have Pride here tonight."

I really want this cinematography book. And I can’t buy it. I can’t buy it because I’m jobless right now. And this is the first time in years that I can’t buy a book.

And it’s kinda killing me. And I’ve been interviewing almost non-stop. I have three interviews next week. Had four last week. Most of the jobs are as much as I was making or more. Lots of growth potential. If I decide to move back to Texas then I’ll earn everything I was earning and more (in a lower cost of living area). The bulk of my contacts are there and everyone is offering up jobs in my field

But in this one second. This one moment I am transported back to a time when I was a kid and I couldn’t buy books at the book fair and I had ran through the meager selection at our struggling school. And the closest library was 10 miles away  (which really might as well have been hundred without public transportation) and I couldn’t ever check out books because it was so far away so I couldn’t return them timely. And yeah…this just sucks.

But it’s a reminder than I’m spoiled. So very spoiled at this point in time. I want. I get. And so this is good. It’s a reminder. I need to remember that poor girl in Arkansas. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.

ALICE ROOSEVELT WAS HARDCORE. “She was known as a rule-breaker in an era when women were under great pressure to conform. The American public noticed many of her exploits. She smoked cigarettes in public, swore at officials, rode in cars with men, stayed out late partying, kept a pet snake named Emily Spinach (Emily as in her spinster aunt and Spinach for its green color) in the White House, and was seen placing bets with a bookie.

When it came time for  Teddy Roosevelt’s family to move out of the White House, the president’s daughter, Alice,  also buried a Voodoo doll of the new First Lady, Nellie Taft, in the front yard. Which caused her to be banned from the White House. Source

I was driving past a business here in the Houston Heights, when I glimpsed this painted on the side of the building. I recognized that iconic WWII poster before I realized it was not just any woman, but 14 year old Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who was attacked for wanting an education. The words next to her are her quote, ( “I don’t mind if I have to sit on the floor at school.) All I want is education. And I’m afraid of no one.”

Oh God. This is true for me. Way before my parents even thought to have a sex talk with me, they had to have the talk to explain that people hate me for the color of my skin and that I had to watch out for that.
