Okay, so Amazon sent me an email about an hour ago, telling me that The Country Omega was available for purchase*, and that people who pre-ordered it should have it in their Kindles (or phones or what have you) now.  Asterisk included.

When I scrolled to the bottom of the page, turns out the asterisk means that the change from pre-order to order could take up to 24 hours.

Of course, when I go to the page for the book, it’s still showing as pre-order, so who knows.

Anyway – if you pre-ordered The Country Omega, you might have it now?  Or maybe not. Who the hell knows.

Okay, so I might be obsessively refreshing the page over and over and over and over and over….

I keep refreshing my kindle now to check. So far no, but that’s probably just as well. I have a 2.5 hour commute that I’ll need to start at 6am tomorrow. It would be unsafe to start reading it now if it did come.

How long is it anyway?

According to Kindle, 334 pages. But for those used to wordcounts, it’s 80K.

Also, still refreshing the page. Still in pre-order status. THIS IS NERVE-WRACKING.

I just got an email saying it’s ready for me to DL whenever I’m ready so I think it’s live.

After succumbing to a fever of some sort in 1705, Irish woman Margorie McCall was hastily buried to prevent the spread of whatever had done her in. Margorie was buried with a valuable ring, which her husband had been unable to remove due to swelling. This made her an even better target for body snatchers, who could cash in on both the corpse and the ring.

The evening after Margorie was buried, before the soil had even settled, the grave-robbers showed up and started digging. Unable to pry the ring off the finger, they decided to cut the finger off. As soon as blood was drawn, Margorie awoke from her coma, sat straight up and screamed.

The fate of the grave-robbers remains unknown. One story says the men dropped dead on the spot, while another claims they fled and never returned to their chosen profession.

Margorie climbed out of the hole and made her way back to her home.

Her husband John, a doctor, was at home with the children when he heard a knock at the door. He told the children, “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.”

When he opened the door to find his wife standing there, dressed in her burial clothes, blood dripping from her finger but very much alive, he dropped dead to the floor. He was buried in the plot Margorie had vacated.

Margorie went on to re-marry and have several children. When she did finally die, she was returned to Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, Ireland, where her gravestone still stands. It bears the inscription “Lived Once, Buried Twice.”

Adlock Speculation: The Case of the Disappearing Rose

My husband and I watched a few episodes of Sherlock again and came upon a realization when we watched “His Last Vow.”

There seems to be further evidence that Irene Adler not only visited Sherlock Holmes in the hospital after he was shot and left a single rose and card (already confirmed by the writers), she may very well have helped him escape the hospital too.

Here’s what appeared in the actual episode:

Note the single tall rose, standing alone on the table by the window, in Sherlock’s direct line of sight.

It’s tall enough that in the shot below, it should still have been visible, but it’s gone.

We can probably say that it’s been moved to the side, but we had a shot of the whole room, and the rose is nowhere to be found.

To further drive the point, here’s the deleted scene which showed and featured the rose more prominently throughout the clip.

You can read more about this card explanation here and how it proves without a doubt that Irene left it for him.

So why is the disappearance of the rose important in proving Irene’s involvement in getting Sherlock out of the hospital?

1. Irene sent the rose and card to Sherlock. It’s likely that she brought it in herself, possibly disguised as a hospital staff. Magnussen seems to have deduced that ‘a woman’ had held Sherlock’s hand while he slept in the hospital (  card explanation here ). She may still be around the area, long enough perhaps to return to Sherlock’s side.

2. Sherlock was still gravely injured. He had just been in the hospital for less than 24 hours. In his weakened state, he couldn’t have made the escape on his own, much less leave the room without creating a ruckus, or a mess. The room was relatively organized, save for the crumpled blanket and open window. (That he internally bled hours later proves he was still very much weak and had to have had help in escaping the hospital)

3. Irene has been known to escape from and break in through windows (see “A Scandal in Belgravia) so if anyone can help Sherlock escape through one, it would be her

4. After Sherlock’s escape, he couldn’t be found in any of his usual bolt holes, except for the planted one (Leinster Gardens). Which means he was hidden somewhere else, perhaps by Irene’s design. No one would suspect a dead woman to hide him, and with Irene’s files closed forever, no one could know of her hiding places.

As for why the rose disappeared, one can only speculate that Sherlock told Irene to dispose of it. If we’re to base it on the deleted scene, Magnussen had taken a clear interest on who ‘W’ was and was also able to deduce that a woman had either touched or kissed Sherlock’s hand. With the rose out in the open, it left Irene vulnerable to Magnussen’s investigations so it would make sense for Sherlock to tell Irene to leave no trace of the card or the rose.

If all this is true, then it wasn’t just John and Mary’s safety that drove Sherlock to kill Magnussen. It was for Irene’s as well.

And yes, I’m going to write a fanfic about this XD

I’ve always thought that about the rose, but I love the concept that Irene helped Sherlock escape the hospital, and I can’t wait to read the fanfic that comes out of this!

(And pertaining to that last bit about also shooting Magnussen for Irene’s protection I wrote a meta with the same conclusion here, which also comes out of the missing scene, so obviously I very much agree with that as well ;)

John threw it out the window.

In the past few weeks, the main charge lobbed at the Oscars has been that its nominee pool is 100% white. Monday, Sir Ian McKellen voiced his own frustrations about how the awards show — and Hollywood at large — treats LGBTQ people. He’s not wrong.

Oh dear.

well its literally just anyone who isnt a white man, gay white men have gotten by, still do, by being closeted, but the rest of us are fucked

Yeah it’s like I mean I get him. And I like the man of course. But like they do have the luxury of it not being something they wear on their skin. You don’t look at someone and know they’re gay. And I mean it’s just not the fuckin same. I don’t think he means any ill will with this shit, but honestly Ian sit down. This is not the same.

Also “used to be women” like naw bro it’s still women too. Basically if you are not a white male then you are trudging up a long, winding road with no clear direction.
